Movement and Camps

Post by imanfasil »

The rules are clear you cannot evade or rout through a friendly fortified camp. Can I move through it normally? Can I move through an Unfortified Camp? Is it treated as Open?

Thanks,

Troopps can only move through an Unfortified camp when in rout. They can never move through a fortified camp.

Why not. Because it is not a permitted interpenetration.

But the 'moving through friendly troops' section is all about interpenetrating troops, and camps are not troops.

I don't think the riules actually cover it. But generally it's played that you can't move through a fortified camp. Evaders and routers specifically can't go through a camp, so it's assumed normal movers can't either.

Routers specifically can go through an unfortified camp

Only a friendly one. Still doesn't seem to be a rule to allow you to move through it normally. And since the FAQ says you can't even move through ambush markers i suspect the authors would clarify that it can't be done.

There is a big difference between a formed body and an unformed body moving through a collection of tents.

Sure, this doesn't account for light infantry and the like, but having an hour to form up and 'stage' for battle is totally different to moving through all those guy ropes. Also remember that even if it isn't fortified they would do SOMETHING to make it more fortified than normal. Even in the most basic defences they would lace guy ropes so that they are more difficult to traverse through.

Given supply camps can be deployed forward, possibly it's also to stop players taking advantage of interpenetration and using them as express moving walkways.

Currently, it would seem that a camp is an impassable terrain piece for oneself whilst offering no impediment to one's opponent.

Also, a camp is a symbolic representation. Clearly, it is far too small to accommodate all the BG's which emanate from it prior to the commencement of the game. Therefore, one could presume that the bulk of the true camp extends off table. This in turn suggests that camps should be established only on a side or long edge.

Historically, where possible, troops tended to flee towards their own camp. Evaders therefore could flee into a camp with the result that pursuers would then sack the camp.

It's nothing to do with a terrain piece.

It offers an impediment to the opponent. They can't walk through it either, and if they touch it become stuck like an ant in honey until they can work themselves free.

I for one have routed an enemy that I've attacked into the flank of once they'd taken my camp. Sure, I lost the camp, but 2 points of fighting troops vs 2 points of camp - I took the trade willingly... and it was my fault that he got to my camp in the first place.
