Which medieval battle would you like me to make?

Post by stockwellpete »

I have come to the end of my Anglo-Scottish exertions for now - although there still may be one or two minor skirmishes that I might do later on if I can find more info (e.g. Nesbit Moor 1402). So is there a battle or three from the late medieval period in western and central Europe that you think might make for a good wargame? I have a couple of ideas for Swiss scenarios. Morgarten is done already; Sempach has been done by somebody else and will be included with "Eternal Empire"; but shortly I will be looking at the Swiss battles with the Burgundians and the Duchy of Milan (later 15thC).

I am conscious that we have very little for the Scandinavian armies so that might be one area to look, Also in Spain there may be battles between the Christian and Muslim kingdoms in the period 1200-1500 that offer potential.

The Lombardy wars in Italy in the 15thC would work well in FOG and I am wondering whether it will be possible to do some of the battles in the Italian Wars that continued well into the 16thC. Obviously one problem here would be the increasing power of firearms and how that can be represented realistically with the handgunner units at our disposal. (Enzo, if you are reading this, your thoughts on this would be most appreciated). I am not sure it is too much of a problem. Already in FOG SOA the archery fire is attritional in effect, whereas in real life, particularly with respect to the longbow, archery fire might be considered "explosive" in its impact. And I have done some 16thC scenarios in Ireland (1590s) that seem to work OK, from what people have said about them anyway.

I would be interested to hear your suggestions.

Muret . . .

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Muret

Hmm . . . the Albigensian crusade. Excellent! But it is 1,500 versus around 30,000! Nonetheless, I shall give it a try as it has a king Peter in it. :D

Frank, a first version of Muret is now available. I have just used the info on Wikipedia, nothing else. When I get more info I will update the scenario but I think it basically works. I have not included the town of Toulouse on the map because I don't know where it should go and it does seem peripheral to the main action. I will put a challenge on for you shortly, pw "hatepikes".

Are you saying that scenarios can be accepted and played without having the scenario files installed on their PC?

Yes. You could play one of my medieval ones even though you don't have SOA, I believe.

Uuh, that's a new one. I thought custom scenarios were only playable on single player.

That's great.

Thanks

Stockwell sent a custom scenario challenge to everyone but me

You'll have to make up for that by letting me playtest Pavia, which Im sure you are cooking up right now in your hilltop lair.

Yes, Pavia is on the production line. Very complicated though so it might be a few days.

Right - Muret 1213 and Pavia 1525 are done. Anything else wanted desperately?

You may recall that I ran a Condotta invitation tournament a few months ago. Very interesting armies and battles. So my next series of scenarios will almost certainly be the Wars in Lombardy 15thC - and then, if Pavia works out OK, I will start researching the Italian Wars 1490s to 1550s. There are at least 20 scenarios to consider across these two conflicts. Should keep me busy until Xmas!

I'm also very chuffed to point out that a number of my scenarios have been included in the Eternal Empire expansion pack - they include Aljubarotta, Atoleiros, Castillon, Cocherel, Najera and Schaulen. :D

Fedem, I have two play-tests running for Pavia right now - and already a few minor changes are needed to improve it. Once these two games are finished, I will update with the changes and then we can do a play-test. Basically I want to use Pavia as the template for my Italian Wars stuff. The Wars in Lombardy series will be more orthodox late medieval battles.

Now that we have Eternal Empire: Nicopolis 1396?
Hungarians, Wallachians and French-Burgundian crusaders against Ottoman Turks and their Serbian vassals.

I was a bit surprised not to find it in the scenarios included with ETE. Same with Varna 1444.

The Hungarian army should probably be based on the 'Middle Hungarian (Crusader)' DAG list, only the year given in the list is wrong: it should be 1396 instead of 1392.

I like these suggestions, Epicouros. I will be getting Eternal Empire shortly and I'll bear these battles in mind. I had a look on Wikipedia just to get an idea about Nicopolis and Varna and they both look like good candidates for scenarios. Also the two battles at Kosovo. I have to admit that I know very little of the history at the moment but that is something that I shall rectify in the next couple of months.

I do plan to do the Wars in Lombardy next (15thC) and I have ordered a couple of books on the condotta this week. There may be half a dozen scenarios involved, maybe a few more than that. Then I will start reading up on the Ottomans and in the autumn I will probably dovetail an Ottoman battle with an Italian War battle (mainly 16thC). I have just done Pavia 1525 and I feel it works very well even though the arquebuses are a bit under-powered, so I am keen to do a few more of them.
