Stalingrad tips?

Post by JatMan »

Anybody got tips for winning Stalingrad? Reaching Baku in a timely manner is quite the pain in the @$$ - that's been my main problem with this part of the campaign. I'm playing on Colonel (medium) difficulty, so I guess that says something as to my skill (or lack thereof) at the game...

I have just finished Stalingrad scenario and I have to say - it's interesting one :-)
Difficulty: Colonel, East campaign: 1941-1945, Marginal victory in 21 turns. No Tigers even paratroopers used in this mission.

I divided my troups to 5 army groups with specific targets:
1.A: Roll through Voronezh to Stalingrad. I was surprised with two KV1 tanks and it took long time to eliminate them.
2.A: Blitzkrieg through Valuyki to Stalingrad. Easy task.
3.A+4.A: The intial task was to eliminate Rostov defence jointly. There was one tough KV1 to destroy. Afterwards the large forces were split to south army with classic blitzkrieg task and east army continuing to Stalingrad.
3.A South army: Surprisely no large defence was not encountered and all proceeded quickly but it's a long way to reach Baku. The army consisted of two panzers, one howitzer and two infantry units.
4.A East army passed to Stalingrad in order to participate tough fights in Stalingrad's surrounding. Later on some parts drove to take Astrakhan.
5.A: Get Sevastopol fortress. With Gustav's help it was nice to watch his power eliminating all infantry units and ships. I put one my core tank in order to face some army soviet armored forces expected but no appeared in this part of front. Finally I missed this useless tank in more exposed areas. Once the Sevastopol was secured two infantry units were moved quickly via train to Stalingrad. Gustav had more work with last annoying ship.
I'm curious about other experience how to win this large scenario :-)

paras always help me out in this one. I start be sending them across the sea to that airfield that is on the coast, capture it and eliminate the russians there, 2 paras is what I send in. After that they plane up and head south to capture the lonely little objective way down south. After that they can foot it back up north to join up with the forces that have taken Stalingrad and are moving south.

I like to have a bridge engineer to cross that river over by the airfield, while my arty pounds the Russian guns in range, or infantry if there are no guns in range. Once over the river and having taken the airfield I send the tanks in to deal with the Ruski arty and then get my boys to sit on the bridges with arty to their rear and let the Russians attack me. Usually they end up taking the worst of it from my guns. Then you can attack from front and rear and then its kriegspiel to the other objective hexes. Air power always helps in this one as my level bomber takes out the Russian navy while the big gun gets railed to whatever objective is in range that needs to be taken down. Keep an inf unit or two in those objective cities near the coast as there are Ruski partisans in those hills that will sneak in and take them on you while you back is turned. Air power can be useful in taking them down a few notches, try not to hit them in the mountains though as they are likely mountain troops and will hurt if you go after them while they are full strength.
Hope that helps at bit.
