AI and artillery

Post by borsook79 »

It seems to me that AI has some problems using artillery, mainly:

- tends to put it in the front just to have something in range and thus loses it on the next turn.
- quite often AI first attacks with a ground unit and only then fires at it with arty.

I have to be honest I've not noticed either of these things..I might just be lucky though

Usually the artillery is behind the defensive line, the only time I've not seen it is when I've approached from a different direction

While I remember having seen that the most time the AI used Artillery and Air to suppress my units and then used infantry to finish the job.
So my tactic is to use Artillery/Air to suppress AI Arrtillery first and best to get a tank to really finish the AI Artillery. Sometimes the AI then retreats and uses all prestige to fill it up again next round :D

But I'm still struggling a lot beating the AI so I'm not that good to comment on this.

Would level of difficulty have something to do with that?

Not noticed this either.

I see this quite a lot when AI sets up defense around cities, i.e. a circle. When it does form a line it's not a problem.

I noticed only a few times the first problem i.e. artillery in front lines. Even then it only happen usually when the computer is moving troops behind the front lines and my scout stumbles upon a transport which is fine. You got to move the artillery at some point and then it can be caught. Hell it sometimes happens to a human player as well.

The second problem i.e. AI attacking first with ground units and then with artillery is quite common, at least on colonel difficulty. Sometimes the AI behave "correctly" and use artillery first then attack but sometimes it attacks first with ground units. I am not sure but it may have something to do if the artillery is in range of the target before it got to move or after. Artillery in range before movement tends to shot before other ground attackers but artillery that got to move into range first often shots after other ground attackers.

The AI and movement with firing last is being looked into on the next review of the AI.
