Mac Beta first impressions

Post by boshar »

Did the tutorial missions and the first 2 missions from the Western Dessert campaign. The game looks good and I'm impressed at how speedy it plays (modest iMac with 3.06 Mhz Intel Core 2 Duo , 4 GB, 256 MB ATI Radeon HD 4670). Some things you might want to look into:

Startup screen always defaults to the no shadows setting. Other options can be selected (and do work) but it doesn't remember the settings from earlier sessions.

Full screen distorts the screen ratio. Full screen on the iMac is always wide screen so circles become egg shaped, etc. Could not find an option to set the resolution for full screen.

Had one crash. I put the game in the option screen and switched off the backlight (Ctrl, Shift, Eject). It took a while before I returned. There was a crash warning about the BA application. Judging from the time it had run for about one hour before crashing. I have the dump in txt format but I don't see an option to attach it to this forum message.

In my opinion no show stopping bugs yet. It plays great. Enjoying the game :D

Thanks for the catch on the options screen - I had forgotten to save out the preferences.

When you say you switched off the backlight, do you mean you put the machine to sleep? I'm not sure that the game could really recover from that - but I'm not sure what it actually does. I guess I will try it here! :)

Thanks for all your feedback, and let us know if you have any more!

Cheers

I only switched of the backlite ( the only way to switch off the screen and keep the computer running) but I guess that after 1 hour the sleep function kicks in.

Most Mac apps survive the sleep function. If you are interested in the Mac crash dump I can mail it to you.

A small update. I used a save from just before the crash loaded the situation and forced the computer to go to sleep. After waking up BA was running as normal. Tried it in a running game and from the option screen. It all worked normal so resuming after sleep mode is not a problem.

Maybe the application crash was one-time fluke or related to running BA for several hours.
