Tutorial #4 - Fallschirmjäger

Post by tramal »

i don't really get it how the paratroopers work in the tut...

i guess i'd need a air-transport-unit? but there's none available in the tut.

the tactical-bombers (stuka) don't work as transport, do they? (can't embark...)

how else would they work? how can i drop behind enemy lines?

thanks in advance

To load paratrooper onto an air transport:
- Move it to an airfield hex
- Click Embark/Disembark button in the UI sidebar.

Note: number of available transports is shown in a tooltip when you hover Embark/Disembark button.

To drop paratroopers:
- Click Embark/Disembark button
- Click the hex you want to drop on

thx for the answer - but as said, there's is no air-transport in the tutorial - or am i blind?

there's just the stukas
and my fallschrimjäger is at the airfield - but the embark-button is greyed out

and concerning the tooltip - i've seen that
it says 4/4 - what exactly does it mean? 4 used of 4 available?
and where are those 4?

i'Ve read the manual - but these infos are missing

any tips?

One of the coolest things is you can take any infantry unit without ground transport, launch it from an airfield, fly it to another airfield and land it, I think even on an unoccupied enemy airfield (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

This sort of stuff smacks of Germany's Otto Skorzeny and special paratroop commando-type operations and is very cool.

You need to own both airfields to do an infantry air transport. Paratroopers can drop anywhere, though.

Is there a chance of missed drops?
In other words I click to have the paratrooper land in one hex, but because of a sudden wind shear he lands in the hex next to the one I wanted him to land in…
.... something that happens from time to time.

Yes, missed drops can indeed happen!

Is there a way to start a Fallschirmjäger as ground units, I mean without buying them a truck or half-track.
I would like to use them as regular infantry in some scenarios, yet keeping the ability to start airborne on other scenarios.

No, unfortunately. If they have ground transport they start on the ground, otherwise in the air.

But I find very few scenarios when you want them in the air anyway.

Hi, I know, i tried all combo of keys, ie; shift+lift-click, alt+ctrl etc, etc; but to no avail of grounding a para unit, unless no air transport were avaible.
It can be done the turn after the deployment phase, by using up all avaible air transports usable by that unit ( as of patch 1.11 units do not use movement points by embarking or dis-embarking on the same hex ) and then deploying it on an availbe ground deployment hex.
It would be easier to just add a key + left click to switch from air to a ground unit.

I had an german Wehrmacht Inf fly to an emeny air field and it landed no problem, changed onership too on the same turn.

Thanks for your answers

Agreed for the vanilla game, but after playing several FM campaigns, and The GC East,
I have start a new GC East using "Deducter, units revisions mod" viewtopic.php?f=147&t=30708

And there is more incentive to use the Fallschirmjäger as elite ground infantry, as they were often used after the Crete disaster.
I'll see if I buy them vehicles as the campaign progress, but so far I may still have use for their airdrop traits, and I have not yet enough prestige to buy trucks several times.

Try using the cheat code of "air" with a negative number to bring the available air transports to zero. Place your paratroops (on the ground because there's no air transport now) and then reinstate the number of air transports to what they were at the start to use with the rest of your deployment.

Interesting,

But as far as i know , the "air", "sea' and "rail" cheats were removed from the available cheats with v 1.10.

I use v1.11
I can change the core limit with "core #n" and the number of core units available will instantly be updated.
but the "air #n" as no effect

I think you're right. Not sure why the useful one was removed...
