Akragas (DC) 406BC (FPSC game 2)

Post by Archie »

Siege of Akragas (406 BC)
The Siege of Akragas took place in 406 BC in Sicily; the Carthaginian enterprise ultimately lasted a total of eight months. The Carthaginian army under Hannibal Mago[1] besieged the Dorian Greek city of Akragas in retaliation against Greek raids on Punic colonies in Sicily. The city had managed to repel Carthaginian attacks until a relief army from Syracuse defeated part of the besieging Carthaginian army and lifted the siege of the city.

During the siege, Hannibal and a large number of Carthaginian soldiers had perished of plague, and the survivors were in dire straits after the Greeks managed to cut their supply lines. However, the Carthaginians, now led by Himilco, a Magonid kinsman of Hannibal, managed to capture a Greek supply convoy of ships using the Carthaginian fleet, which forced the Greeks to face the threat of starvation in turn. This caused first the Sicilian Greek detachment, then most of the population of Akragas to leave the city, enabling Himilco to capture and sack the city.

Hi, here's my review of the battle on the FOG Wiki - keen to receive any feedback after you've played your games

Akragas 406BC (DC) Low complexity (27 units) - Points strength & weighting - Carthage 178(15) 60% Syracuse 156(12) 40%
A small battle with a wide variety of troop types that can be played very quickly. Primarily the battle is between Hoplite and Medium foot, with normally the Carthaginian MF being able to choose when to charge as they have an extra one hex in movement allowance. Both sides have to use their commanders in the front line, so the battle can easily sway if a commander is slain. A good battle to begin learning the game.

To say this is more of a challenge than Marathon is an understatement. These armies give many possibilities and much depends on the initial impact of the Carthage MF with the Hoplites, a good result and the numbers help swarm over the Syracusans, a poor result and the spears will reign supreme.

Morbio (Carthage) 4/15 vs 13/12 Ferb (Syracuse)

Morbio (Syracuse) 7/12 vs 15/15 Ferb (Carthage)

In the 1st battle I felt I had a slight tactically better position versus the hoplites, but the battle changed completely when one of my Light Spear MF blitzed a HF Hoplite unit with 4 hits to 1 and took it from steady to fragged with heavy losses. This opened up the flank of the line and a slight edge became overwhelming.

The second battle was seemingly going to be a walk in the park once the hoplites had survived the initial impact from the Carthage MF and hoplites, especially since many MF went disrupted. It was about 1 vs 12 when suddenly a unit on the left flank collapsed, routing through the rear support, disrupting it and opening it to a devastating charge from a chariot. A chain loss of cohesion followed and the right flank cavalry routed too (it had been toe-to-toe with a chariot for about 4 turns). Suddelnly Syracuse looked doomed.... luckily 2 LF managed to frag 2 disrupted units with missile fire and a disrupted hoplite unit managed to chase some Carthage skirmishers off the battlefield to sneak the final point!

Ferb deserved better than the points suggest. Thanks for a great challenge.

A nice choice of scenario, Archie!

Triarius (Carthaginians) 12/15 Tofman (Syracusans) 13/12

Triarius (Syracusans) 7/12 Tofman (Carthaginians) 16/15

Two close games; the first really decided by a race to the bottom with the dice. Just as I was starting to feel that Mago would have to be executed for abject performance Tofman showed me that Daphaneus could do even worse - a truely extraordinary sequence of 12 dice rolls with rerolls and not one hit before a quick exit.
Thanks for the games T and my apologies for having had better bad luck.
