Unit Details Panel: Possible Improvements

Post by AgentX »

I really like the Unit Details Panel and refer to it often. However, it could be a little more user friendly. First thing, is it could use a Next Unit and Prev Unit buttons added to the interface. It is a real pain to Alt/Click and close for each unit, especially if you want to check on several units. It would be much easier to be able to scroll through your units instead of opening and closing the panel for each one (also having the Hotkeys N and P work with it would be nice). Below, is a quick mock-up of how it could look (bear with me, I did in 2 mins with Paint). Also, I mentioned another improvement before and Kerensky added it to The List. It regards showing the Hero's affect on your unit stats instead adding up the bonuses mentally (by adding in the bonus and showing it with a different color). I am also showing how that might look in this picture. For purpose of example, it is a Hero bonus of +3 defense on an PzIII tank (normal defense stats of 8 Hard/6 Soft/2 Close). I used yellow, but that is also only for an example.

Another idea would to better show what the Hero bonus is in the Battle History page. Currently, you have to hover your cursor over the Hero's picture to see what the bonus is. Why not just have it in type under the picture and/or in the chronological log on the right? Here's an example of a Hero giving a movement bonus of +1, placed in both spots. It would be nice to be able to see this info at a glance instead of hovering your mouse over their picture, especially once you have more than one Hero.

I like features that spell out information for the player, such as +1 movement right under the portrait, but...

We're putting the finishing touches on the unique leaders (Hartmann, Galland, Whittman, et cetera) and these fellows have quite a few bonuses. Attack and Initative, Defense and Movement, for example, and it probably won't fit in as nicely as +1 movement has.

What about if they were abbreviated:
MV
Def
Att
Init
etc.
I like the idea of seeing the bonuses at a glance, too.

@Kerensky, well, for the multiple bonus Heroes, there is plenty of room in the chronological log on the right. It doesn't have to be under the picture, I just thought it looked nice. Also, how about the Next Unit and Prev Unit option on the Unit Details panel? I think it would be a great help and make it more user friendly. Your thoughts?

I like the idea of a previous/next button for viewing unit details... it would sure be a lot easier than having to click every unit individually. (Especially when trying to see which of my units have leaders/medals.)

I don't think it would be a bad thing, a nice to have. But there are so many nice to haves too. :)

For example, an easier way to view that window; a single letter hotkey instead of 'alt+click'.

That would be convenient too. Of course I realize that, with the game so close to release, these things might not make into the final version. But that's what future expansions and updates are for. 8)
