bit of help for a historical dom rom in 15mm please

Post by bertiebeemer »

Hello all

After some help with making a historical 15mm LIR (er, Dom Rom) army.
I'm not much of a Roman history buff, so am a bit sketchy on details. Apologies.
My son is getting interested in FoG, and in history, and fancies getting his own 15mm army to do some painting and gaming (at home, nothing serious. The gaming that is; the painting is always serious!). He's chosen some later roman types.

So, can someone point me in the right direction of a proper historical construction, along with unit names, so we can get the Notitia Dignitatum shield patterns done too? Open to suggestions for the various units. Good shield patterns a bonus. I'm guessing that as the eastern cav are missing from the copies, we should go western.

I reckon a few BGs of legionaries, a few BGs of auxiliaries, some cav of various sorts, and perhaps an ally for some extra flavour? If going western, then I guess there's no point having just the one BG of Cats, so should have none at all. Get some Sciri instead, plus equites and some mounted bow. Alan mercenaries? Alan ally?

Target 800 APs eventually but 600 good to start.

Thanks in advance

Simon

Good luck, plenty of info out there. Get the WRG book on the period. It's quite good, but I'd seriously reconsider doing anything until version 2 is out. It won't take long.

If a couple or three years is not long. And the figures required to make a historical army will not change, though their grading may.

As stated above the WRG book "Armies and Enemies of Imperial Rome" is a decent starting point and actually lists units by theater for some of the period.

putting the arg into argumentative, except for the lists I check where there is no argument!
