Generals in close combat

Post by plewis66 »

At what points of what phases can a general be declared to be fighting in the front rank?
Is the phrasing on page 51: 'A general can be declared to be fighting in the front rank' intentionally loose in order to allow this to be done at anytime? Or are there any restrictions?
Especially, can a general join a battlegroup that is already engaged in close combat, and then start to fight in the front rank?
Also can a general already with a battle group choose to avoid fighting in the front rank for the impact phase, but then choose to join in for the melee?
This might be nice information to include in the section on generals proposed by someone earlier.

Also at what point does he stop having to be in the front rank. In one game a unit with a general in the front rank broke its opponents, and its pursuit resulted in it hitting another unit while maintaining contack with the routers. Was the general forced to be in the front rank in the new combat?

Generals:

1. You can choose to put your general into combat anytime before rolling the combat dice for that phase. So as long as the general is with the unit he could go in at impact or wait and plough in at melee to help them out.

2. There is no ordering issue, so if you are not planning to put your general in and the other guys decides to, you cn then decide to put yours in if you want.

3. Once you have said he's in he's in for the duration of that combat. That means he stays in the front line until the BG he is with stops fighting by breaking its opponents, or self, or due to a break off. He is no longer in the front rank when pursuing so you will get another option to put him in before the next imapct phase.

Hope that helps

We'll insert something more explicit as above into the rules.
