Before buying this game ..

Post by Solaristics »

Hi, a friend of mine has a Mac and I have a PC, and we want to play this game against each other online. If I understand it correctly, if we wait until the GC 2.00 patch is released next week and we each buy a copy of the game then and download the patch we will be able to play each other PBEM, but not TCIP. Do I understand this correctly? Thanks.

You will definitely be able to play PBEM - I need the dev team to comment on whether you can play TCP/IP. To be honest PBEM is a much better way to play as turns can take a while.

We haven't changed any code regarding TCP/IP play because we felt it didn't work very well in vanilla CeaW. It was quite hard to setup, especially with firewalls in routers.

Earlier version of GS on TCP/IP has been tried and some encountered hang situations in certain circumstances. So I guess that GS v2.0 might encounter the same. Therefore I won't recommend anyone playing GS v2.0 via TCP/IP. We simply haven't optimized GS v2.0 for TCP/IP.

Almost all of us playing GS v2.0 are playing PBEM. This is the version the game is optimized for. I know some have played against the AI, but you might get a difference game balance experience against the AI. I think most human players will beat the AI regardless of side. Once you've met a real opponent you don't want to get back to the AI anymore.

Stauffenberg is certainly right about the AI.
