Shooting at a unit combat

Post by LeslieMitchell »

In this picture

the unit of archer which is not in combat, and the slingers which to shoot at the spear men who are in combat with the spear men, can I get 3 dice needing 5's or 2 dice needing 5 (one from slingers and one from archers)

I believe I can get 3 dice, as the spear man base on the end is a valid target, and the target to its front is not a valid target

Why is the archer BG not in combat? They are lined up with the spearmen BG to the right.

Apart from that question, if both LF BGs are not in combat, they get 3 dice as normal.
All can shoot at the single base of spearmen. If you had the slingers (which seem to be in an overlap position) wheeled in, it were 4 dice.

The spear men move short because the did not wish to charge with no change to impact the LF and allow the pike units get on there flank. Also wheel put me into the restricted zone of the unit behind so could not wheel enough to get 4 dice

I am trying to follow this (please bear with me):

Archers: 4 bases can shoot at spearmen-1 dice per 2 bases, so: 2 dice
Slingers: 4 bases can shoot at spearmen-1 dice per 2 bases, so: 2 dice

So why is the answer 3 shooting dice?

No problem

The base on the left edge of the slingers are within 4MU of the spear men in the left of the picture, so Target rules state a base shoot at the first at the close unit with in it's front arc, i.e. the 40mm straight forward for 15mm models in this case, If there is no valid target it may shoot to the side 1 base width within effective range, 2 base width for long range, hope that explain it for you. Its hard to see ranges on the photo.

Definitely 3 dice from the picture - needing 5's as the target base is part of a BG that is in close combat.
