A few questions

Post by vveedd »

Guys, sorry to smash in like that but I have a couple simple questions. I have read a few AARs and it has been very interesting but nobody said anything about how combat works? I assume that first number on unit counter is some kind of combat value and second is movement value but how you resolve combat? Do you have some odds table like in Third Reich game or what? Same question about air and naval combat. Thanks in advance.

Hi vveedd.

You are right, there is a combat resolution table and a kind of dice roll in the background which determines luck, morale and various battle events that might happen but are not visible directly in the game.
except pure strength there are many modifiers that are affecting battle odds, which can be:
supply level,
commander,
experience,
weather,
terrain,
number of attackers,
use of armored units.

Air combat is managed on the same level as land units actions.
Each air unit at full strength is representing about 250 planes.
Air units can participate in following actions:
attack enemy planes,
bomb enemy units,
bomb enemy cities
bomb enemy fleets
also fighters are providing air cover over land and sea zones
tact bombers are able to provide supply to units that are low in supply

Naval units are moved and managed i the sea zones. Those are a little abstracted zones of more-less similar size (in terms of real world). Units can be moved in different states, as raiders or regular fleets and with different behavior like engage or evade. Whenever two opposing fleets ending it's turn in the same sea zone there is a chance for a naval battle, where you can control your naval units and give them basic orders, like attack specific enemy group, evade, withdraw.
There are also convoys, troop transporters, LCVs, air carriers etc.

Thanks for quick reply. So, if I understood correctly you have odds table and when odds are higher there are more chances to win. Do you have maximal value where win or overrun is certain (5:1 is, for instance, maximum in Third Reich game)?

It is 7:1, but there is still chance for defender ;)

:?: :?: Don't you think that this is unrealistic a little bit? In real combat 3:1 is almost certain win. Also, to my opinion, you should have one certain win value for strategic reason. Sorry if I talking rubbish, as I have said before; haven’t played the game yet and I am, obviously, too late for beta testing.

What I was thinking about is that with 7:1, defender has chance to survive.

On the other hand in real life during the battles between Germany and USSR, soviet casualties and equipment losses were very often 8-10 times greater.
