Charging without orders

Post by IanB3406 »

Questions:

1) A unit of Cav one deep is in front of impact foot who normally don't have to test not to charge. However back 3" is a BG of foot within charge range assuming the Cav evade. Does the Impact foot have to test not to charge?
2) A heavy infantry unit is partially in terrain with 1/2 it's base sticking out. If the impact foot charge at impact they would be fighting in the open in the impact phase, but once conforming in the movement phase they would be sucked into the terrain. Do they have to roll not to charge?

Thanks,

Ian

1. No. The IF don't have to test if they could contact or be intercepted by mounted.

2. If the IF could make a legal charge in the impact phase that enters the terrain they need not test. But what happens in the movement phase doesn't matter.

1) There are two reasons the foot would not have to test. Firstly you do not assume that an intervening target will evade in determining whether you have to charge and secondly you dont have to charge as (Pg58) "if they are foot whose move could contact or be intercepted by mounted".
2) This is more interesting. As conforming happens at the start of the manoeuver phase IMHO if the charge ends out of the terrain (including stepping forward) then the impact foot need to test. It comes down to whether you consider the end of the move to include the conform.

Conforming occurs in the maneuver phase, so is not considered when determining whether a BG will enter terrain in the Impact phase.

Agreed. Possibly a nasty like trick to play.

But the anti-cheese mechanism is likely to be that if the chargers can possibly wheel such that they would go even partly into the terrain during impact, they don't need to test.

Wow.....I'm sure that would result in lots of fun and exciting discussions at the local club game......I'll save it for the tournament.......

I think that arguing that if you wheel you might end in terrain is even more cheesy if the straight charge would end in contact and out of terrain. Personally, I'd like to see more instances where shock troops rashly put themselves in difficulty.

I agree. But see the other current thread that touches on this subject.

The idea that you can avoid a test because of all the legal paths to a target one might cause you to stumble into negating terrain is itself the epitome of cheese.
