Colour and contrast

Post by Happycat »

I'm playing the 1939 scenario of the second version of the beta, and it certainly plays well.

However, I still think that the colour palette is too flat. The attached image illustrates what I mean. If you look at the hexes where the arrows are pointing, the units there do not really stand out. Can anything be done to make these stand out more?

Also, I have "show hex sides" turned on, but you would hardly know it---the outlines of the hexes are very faint. My resolution is set to 1280x1024 and true colour, so I don't think my display is the problem.

In an early UI prototype we used "unit glow" effect when units were placed on difficult terrain, like you see in this screenshot:

Of course it would be togglable on and off in settings in case anybody does not like it. What do you guys think? Would it help with contrast issues?

As for the grid, I kinda like our current solution, because on one hand you have grid, and on the other hand it does not break map integrity. In PzC many tiles extend to neighboring hexes, and strong hex lines would run right across such tiles. But probably we could just add one more option to settings: not just grid on/off, but strong/subtle/off. This way we would satisfy all tastes. :) Does this sound like a good idea?

Hm can you confirm this screenshot is showing the same colours as you are seeing in game?

That is not how it looks in my version. I'll grab & install the last beta to check if there's anything wrong with it.

Yes, if I want the grid on it's because I want the grid ON.

1. Yes, I love the "unit glow" effect. For us near-sighted types, it is perfect.

2. Yes, a strong grid option would be ideal.
