Leaders Triumphant: Campaigns in Gaul

Post by Blathergut »

Am considering designing a campaign set in north-west Europe, say from the rise of Augustus to just past 100 CE.

Armies:

Principate Roman (up to 101)
Early German
Ancient British
Later Gaul (Highlands)
Later Gaul (Lowlands)
Ancient Spanish (Iberian)(But maybe better portrayed as Aquitanian Gauls with Spanish allies)

Other ideas?

We can have more than one commander in each, esp. Gauls.

>small armies at start (400pts, maybe less!!)

>players gain or lose status depending on battle success...winner is he who gains x number of prestige points first
..will work on ideas...any welcome!!...maybe start in about 2 weeks..or when LT comes out (if later)

Of course, in this world, Caesar never completed his conquests.

Armies: (to be continued/edited)

> Aquitanians [Only ones who may use soldurii at start; must have at least 1 Spanish ally; may have lowland ally(s)]
>(Lowland Tribe) [No soldurii to start (only if/when leader's status improves :); no Spanish allies; may have highland ally(s)]
>(Highland Tribe) [No soldurii to start ( " " " " :); no Spanish allies; may have lowland ally(s)]
>LRRome [Only 50% of any troop type may be superior (excluding Cretans); no elites; no allies; no Thracians, Thureophoroi, Elephants, or Syrian Horse Archers; gladiators allowed if fighting another Roman. :)]

Rules etc. (to be developed/edited)

>Each battle won gains you 1 status/prestige point. Each point lets you recruit +50. I will think on losing = -1 point but I don't think so. There were always willing bodies around!
>Basically, anyone can attack anyone, no real movement on a map (but I may change my mind if some good ideas come along. Maybe tie the prestige points to "cities" you gain each time you win (nearest to battle). Would give opponents a target afterwards. :)
>Each 50pts above 400 lets you recruit 1 elite unit.
>WIN? First Chieftan/General to hit...ummmm....how about 600pts? (Too much? Not if allies join in to try and take the successful down!)

I'll post a couple password challenges using the Aquitanians at 400pts (must have 1 Spanish ally; may have lowland ally, may have soldurii).

If anyone is interested, run either of the highland or lowland armies (conditioned above).

Take a look at Lysimachos' Mare Nostrum campaign thread. Uses an abstract map and some well-thought out rules both of which can be found in that thread.

Or you could just run the game with LRR instead of Principate Romans. Avoids the necessity of waiting for LT.

I second Chris' recommendation because I probably won't pick up the latest expansion. I was in the demo and the armies just weren't different enough to justify the expense, but then I'm not that interested in the period.

Okay:

Will try a "first beta" if anyone out there is interested.

Rules are simple, as posted above, for now. Everyone starts at 400pts. A victory gives you a +50. A loss reduces you to 350 in prestige only (which only means it will take you longer to get to 450 and the possibility of recruiting elites)(Aquitanians may only have 1 elite at 350, 0 at 300); you may still recruit 400pts.

Toying with:
>Alliances: Allows one of the players additional points (100?) but must take suitable ally and if the ally general dies...ahem...the ally loses 50pts...and another 50pts if your buddy lost the battle.

>Who attacks who? First round will be a draw. After that, lowest points gets to choose first who to attack (draw if two or more).

Let me know who is interested and your army preference. We can have more than one of each (rival tribes or rival Roman generals)!

I will volunteer to be Gaius Poodiclese, Roman general who will allow the rest of you someone civilized to beat up upon. Just need an official list that I can use since it looks like L T might not be the one were using.
