Good evening.
Almughavars are great, but there is more than one army that offers them, which do you think is the better choice and why?
Also, impact foot or offensive spear, in 6's or 8's?

Usually offesnive spear. As if they win imapct they negate most folks sword and can really beat stuff. I prefered impact in the early days, but that meant you had to win impact. Also being MF you are down versus lance armed cav if impact, but even if off spear at impact.
8s for a similar reason as the extra bases make you more resilient to shooting and harder to get the HPB in impact if it goes against you.

Re: Almughavars
Hmm, do I want to take rocks, paper or scissors. Or a little bit of each. IMO max out on one and minimise the others. If you want Moogs take a moog army. If your game is based on fighting straight up take 8's, if based on manouver take 6's. If you want butt clenching dice dependant fun take impact foot, if you want a steady measured game take spear.Fluffy wrote:Good evening.

I used to play the Moogs in 6's, but I find that size way too fragile. For me now, it's 8's - and I max out on Moogs, take several light horse, minimal cavalry, and then charge.

If you are taking an army primarily of Almughavars (i.e. Catalan Company) or intend to buy substantial numbers of them (some Spanish and Later Sicilian lists) you must IMO take them as offensive spears. As impact foot they are too vulnerable to mounted as impact foot and in those armies IMO you must be able to use these relatively expensive troops pretty freely in the open.
If you are taking smaller numbers of them and want something to really terrorize weaker (close combat) troops, then take them as impact foot.
I generally take them in 6s when drilled and in 8s when undrilled.
I have also found them quite handy against shooty cavalry actually. They relatively fast, fight them at evens and being cheaper you get the numbers to swarm the cavalry...

And take them as Offensive Spear as suggested.
Seriously, Moogs aren't going to win against the better tournament armies. This army is a better tournamnet army because you can get pikeman, protected LH with light spear (which wins at impact vs. most LH and is even in melee for less points than B, sword LH), sword and buckler men in 4 element units (very flexible), 4 element handgun units to bulk out your army, superior knights, etc.
This is a combined arms army in many ways and it takes some practice to be good with it but it is a very competitive army. The other Spanish list is almost as good
