Generals, Units, BGs and Commanders

Post by madaxeman »

OK: a few threads hanging together here...

1. Some players think Generals seem to be doing more admin and not enough "generalling"
2. Its hard not to think of BGs (even if we know they were big blobs of people commanded by named personalities in the historical record) as being "units" (small formations commanded by unnamed blokes).
3. Elite/Good units seem to be able to pass CMTs maybe a bit too easily maybe

So, question 1 > Is the current "1-4 Generals" principle actually a DBX/Other ruleset hangover that doesn't really fit with the CMT/DISR centri mechanics of these rules

Q 2 > Would a lot of these maybe-issues be solved if there were actually less "Big Man"-style generals floating round the battlefield, and somneone invented a "Skilled BG Commander" type permanently attached to their respective (or with one but capable of influencing one or two physically adjacent / similarly equipped) BGs?

Then the Big man General is freed up to do more general-ing stuff (not quite sure what but ...) and BGs develop some reasons for on-table coherence and gain an identity beyond simply being "units by another name" ?

(look, I admit, Exceptionsl Unit Comanders is an idea borrowed from Fire & Fury that I happened to have played on Tuesday. But it seems to make units of a handful of blokes feel like a large formation, gives some an extra edge in maneuvering, and so I just thoght might work here too)

Interesting Tim. One of the perception issues for sure might be solved that way - if a BG had a junior general in command it helps it stopping look like a unit of old. It would add character to the armies too. I quite like the idea of having my samurai with 15 different famous samurai warlords as commanders. On the other hand it makes for many more figures.

We bounced the generals idea around at Usk and the players seemed happy with the game as it is in the meeting. We'll see what else comes out soon. We are in taking stock mode after a very positive and enjoyable weekend so the next few weeks will be the time for us all to mull over different aspects of the rules.
