Evasion shift + Contract

Can an evading BG shift one base AND drop back bases or is it one or the other?

4x2 unit facing down shifts to the right a base width and then drops back both outside files to fit a gap going to:

I am just unsure becuase it seems the bases in the '1' file have moved two base widths and not just one.

It can do one or the other in this instance. The rule is that no base can move more than a base width either to shift or drop back.

If the unit had shifted to the right one base width and then dropped the right file then no base would have moved more than one base width, in your case one of the files would have had to shift one base width then drop back by moving a second base width and that is not permitted.

Thanks Keith. The fact that the mentioned of no base shifting more than 1 base width was part of one of the bullets and not outside of them made me not sure... as within implementing the 'dropback' bullet... it only shifted 1 base width.

Also, check out the examples in Appendix 7. Pages 164 & 165 show a good visual example of shifting the outside files and dropping them back.
