Need help with GS v2.0 beta testing / message translations

Post by Peter Stauffenberg »

We're wrapping up GS v2.0 and would need from people who can verify the added message_***.txt translations for the following languages:
* French
* Italian
* Russian
* Polish

Edit: Got help with German so only need help with the remaining 4 languages.

In addition we would like to have a few experienced GS players who can help beta testing the game balance in GS v2.0. It's needed to play rather quickly so we get the games to the end for analysis and possible game balance tweaking.

Please send a PM to Rkr1958 or me if you think you can help out.

Can you run V2.0 and the old version as well to continue existing games?

It's possible to swap between versions. We do that at the moment between GS v2.00w and GS v2.00x. We do that by having ZIP files with the folders with files that are different between the versions. With GS v2.0 vs GS v1.07 I suggest you rename the Grand Strategy folder to e. g. Grand Strategy v107 and make a full install of GS v2.00. It will then put its files in the Grand Strategy folder system. When you want to run an old game you rename this folder to Grand Strategy v200 and the other back to Grand Strategy.

It shouldn't take much time, but you need to make sure you don't fix the files. E. g. the files in the documents folder structure will be common. The 1939 scenario will be recompiled each time you start GS, but the others will only be recompiled if you remove the corresponding data files from the scenario folder. If you continue existing v1.07 games it's not a problem, but if you want to start new v1.07 games you need to make sure which version is copied in the documents\CEAW Grand Strategy\data\scenario folder. The best is to remove ALL data files in that folder so they all have to be recompiled using the version currently active.

I'm pretty sure you don't want to play any more GS v1.07 games after you try GS v2.0. Actually GS v1.07 is not supported anymore and all effort in on GS v2.0. E. g. we no longer have the source code for GS v1.07 so we can't fix any bugs in that version.

What sort of time frame are you looking at here?

Within a few weeks. If we want a release in March we definitely need to see games to the end some time in February so we can make needed adjustments and maybe retry a bit to see if the adjustments work. We want to get in several end of game data before any tweaking. Our target is to have a victory split between the Allies and Axis within 45%/55% either way. Then we think the game is balanced enough. If it's too much in one way we make minor tweaks that will hopefully push the balance towards 50%/50%. So if the games already started show that we land within the balance we want then we don't have to tweak anymore.

E. g. the tweak of letting unit repairs only spend 60% manpower compared to new builds are done to delay the time the Axis collapse due to manpower being too low. The same about spending less oil if the unit is depleted. Those 2 alone can keep the Axis in game for some months extra, hopefully just enough to last another season or two.

Victory conditions are changed so the Allied victory is minor only of they take all capitals in 1945 (before May 1945). Major is if they do it in July-December 1944. Strategic if in January-June 1944 and ultimate if in 1943 or earlier. So hopefully we will see less overwhelming Allied victories.

I found the description of how you would set up 2.00 to run alongside 1.07 a little confusing. I couldn't quite understand why you couldn't have two complete copies (1.07 and 2.00) at the same time and what you would need to do (and why) to go back and forth between the two versions. It seems to have something to do with the folder names, but I'm not sure. Maybe a step by step series of simple instructions for those of us who are easily confused would help.

Point is that there are hundreds of different files between GS v1.07 and GS v2.00. So the easiest way to swap is to rename the main Grand Strategy folder and make a complete installation of GS v2.00. Then you have 2 main folder structures you can rename back and forth between to select the version you want to play.

I wonder why you would have to rename them? Why couldn't you have a Grand Strategy 1.07 and a Grand Strategy 2.00 as the folder names?

We could, but GS v1.07 will be terminated soon and not supported anymore.
