slow performance

Post by wdkruger »

I am running FOG on a Dell Inspiron E1505 with an Intel Duo Core Processor running a 2Ghz, 1.5 GB RAM and a ATI X1400 video card with 256 MB memory. FOG takes several minutes to load and seems very sluggish for this type of game. Animations seem much slower than those shown on a you tube video of the game. My system has no problem handling Civ IV and other turn based games.

Is there anything I can do to speed this up?

On a Core 2 Duo here, FoG 1.4.0 takes 7 seconds to load to the main menu, then 6 seconds to load to a new game of Silarus River, so it shouldn't take several minutes to load.

I think the most likely problem is a shortage of RAM. Firstly, please update to FoG version 1.4.0 if you haven't already, as it uses RAM more efficiently than earlier versions.

Please can you try closing all other applications before you open FoG. This should include apps that run in the system tray, as much as possible.

Also, do you know if you're successfully running any other games or applications that use OpenGL? If so, do they run smoothly?

You could also try updating your graphics driver. (I believe it's sometimes better to get your driver directly from the AMD website, rather than through Dell or Windows Update.)

Updated my video card drivers and it seemed to help a lot. Game animation is much faster. Load time is 45 seconds, which is a big improvement, although still not 7 seconds. thanks.

Hi wdkruger, Your video card is old with a small amount of Ram on it. Try getting an HD 2600XT, 3850, 3870, 4670, 4850, 4870, 4890, 5750, 5770, or 6850 with 1GB of Ram rather than 512MB of Ram. All hese cards can be bought for under $200 & many under $100 both new & used.
