Overlap in a coulmn

Post by kal5056 »

Had an unusal situation today.

A BG of Med foot was in column 4 deep. They were engaged with a BG of Elephants to their front and the back 2 bases of the column were in a spot to provide over lap to another BG that was also fighting a BG of elephants.

____ElEl
____XX 1
_ELEXX 2
_OO XX 3
_OO XX 4

Not sure if this will look right but XX represents 8 bases of MF in Column, EL are Elephants and OO are friendlies to XX.

Can rows 1 and 2 fight the Elephants to the top of the page and rows 3 and 4 of XX provide overlap dice to the other BG?

Thank You

Overlap positions are defined on page 75.

From your diagram it looks as though X 3 is corner to corner and edge to edge with the front O, in which case it can fight as a overlap and X 4 fights as the second rank behind the overlap.

According to Overlaps on page 89:

Each overlapping file fights with the same net POA and ranks as if it was in front edge contact with the overlapped enemy base.

And in the last bullet under this:

A base that can contribute to close combat to its front (with dice or creating a POA cannot fight as an overlap.

So I guess the questions is if the "overlapping file" is only the bases that are in the file in an overlap position or if it includes the entire file in the BG that includes the overlapping bases. By analogy with how non flank charge impact on a non front rank base is handled, I would think it would be the full file, not just that portion of it in an actual overlap position. If that is the case, the rear ranks would not contribute in this case since the front of the overlapping file is in contact with enemy to its front.

FWIW I agree with Lawrence - the rear bases can count as an overlap.

If they were pikemen then they would be contributing to the frontal combat and hence not count as an overlap - but the OP says they are MF so we know they're not pikes.
