Historical AAR - Axis versus Allied AI (The AI Concedes)

Post by rkr1958 »

Objectives:
1. Test the stability of the GS expansion in play against the AI.
2. Present a forum to showcase the expansion for discussion and feedback.
3. Have fun.

Ground Rules:
The GS expansion is designed specifically for PBEM and hot seat play without any “house rules”. That is, anything allowed by the game engine, short of cheating (i.e.reloading and replaying turns), is within the spirit of the expansion. An experienced player can easily exploit the weakness of the AI even capturing Paris in 1939 and / or totally defeating the UK, USSR and even the USA. While games such as these can be played on their own merit that is not the way that this game will be played.

1. I will only invaded those countries in GS that were historically invaded by the axis and on the date that they were invaded. For historical dates that don’t fall on a game turn, which most of them won’t, then the invasion will be on the last game turn before that date. Also, for countries initially invaded by Italy (i.e., Greece and Egypt) Germany will not intervene no sooner than they did historically. It’ll be interesting to compare my conquest results against the historical conquest dates. In fact I will grade myself using the color scheme below.

Image

2. Greece. The invasion of Greece will be carried out by the Italians on the October 25, 1940 game turn. The Italian fighter, tactical bomber and armor corps will be commitment in Greece until its conquest. The German cannot intervene in Greece by land or air until the April 3, 1941 game turn.
3. North Africa. The Italians will invade Egypt on August 26, 1940 or one turn after Egypt activates if later. The DAK (i.e., Africa Corps) will consist of a German armor unit led by Rommel will arrive no earlier than the February 2, 1941 game turn. Historically, the DAK began arriving in North Africa starting on February 10, 1941 with Rommel arriving on February 14, 1941 and taking command at that time. The Germans will also commit one fighter unit to North Africa. The total axis air strength in North Africa will not exceed two air units.
4. (German) Axis Minors. Hungarian, Romania, Bulgarian and Finnish units will not be used for anti-partisan (i.e., counter resistance) operations in France or garrison of French cities. Axis minors, which can always be used within the own country as necessary; will be used outside their home country as follows. Bulgarian units can be used in Yugoslavia and Greece after these countries are conquered. Hungarian units can be used in Yugoslavia, including support of the invasion, and later can be used in southern Russia only. Romanian units will only be used in southern Russia (i.e., outside of Romanian). Finnish units can attack Russian units but cannot move beyond the limits of their initial starting positions. That is, they can’t be used to push deeper into Russia.
5. German u-boats can only be used offensively to attack allied convoys. They CANNOT be used to attack the RN or allied transport. The only “attacks” of this sort allowed is when allied units of these types run into hidden subs.
6. German u-boats CANNOT take up position in or block access to the English Channel.
7. I will have 6 German u-boat flotillas (i.e., 3 more built ones) by the time Russia is invaded.
8. Axis air units can be used to attack the RN. However; axis fighters cannot attack allied air units at their airbases.
9. The Italians cannot build additional air or naval units, including sub groups, but can repair as necessary the ones they start with.
10. German and Italian transport and invasion capacities will never be exceeded.

Personal Note: I usually start these things on weekends during "dead time" and during the week is when I realize what sort of time commitment I've made to the project, which in this case is this AAR. I do find them fun and hopefully you do too. However; I can certainly achieve objectives 1 and 3 stated above much faster and with less effort without posting to an AAR. The second stated objective does require an AAR and I don't mind keeping it as long as others find it useful. I'm looking for encouragement and participation to keep it going. By the way, it won't hurt my feeling if you feel the other way (i.e., it's not useful) and wish to voice your opinion as such too. Bottom line is please provide feedback is you wish me to continue or stop this AAR.

Also, if you can think of any other guidelines you'd like me to follow please voice them.

It took me a while to figure out what you were saying ... but I finally got it. I had incorrectly entered the historical conquest date as June 10, 1949 and not June 10, 1940. I corrected that using the editor in photobucket. Thanks for noticing. :D

Now what do I do from now until the April 8, 1940 turn? I guess this is really the phony war.

Turn 11. March 19, 1940. Fast Forward to the Eve of the Invasions of Norway and Denmark.

While one would think that these invasions historically would signal the end to the phony war and the beginning of the "real war" in Europe it didn't. Britain and France hoped that the war would play out outside mainland Europe in places like Norway or in places further east like Denmark and Finland. Britain was saved the label of aggressor in Norway by the fact that Germany beat them to it. There were even serious discussions and plans in Britain as using Norway as a base to provide materials and troops to help Finland against the Soviet Union. Britain was saved from this disaster by the German invasion of Norway. Can you imagine what would have happened if Britain had been at war with Germany AND The Soviet Union in April 1940?

Turn 12. April 8, 1940 Axis. The distant war continues. Denmark and Norway Invaded. Denmark Conquered.

Despite the invasions of Norway and Denmark, the British and French continue to deceive themselves that the war in Europe will not come to them. The last thing that they want is a replay of World War I and trench warfare. Little do they know that a new type of warfare is about to rain down on them and that the least of their concerns is trench warfare. The storm is coming and they are ill prepared. Case Yellow begins next turn.

It's now possible to upgrade units in enemy ZOC, but at a slightly higher upgrade cost.

Notice the added city of Lodz in Poland (a garrison in the city). This means the Germans will usually need most of their army to take out Poland in 2 turns. So if you rail units to the west for a swift attack into Holland then Poland will hold 3 turns or more.

Notice also that Liege is changed into a fortress to emulate the Eben Emael fortress. The fortress is automatically converted to a city once Germany is paradrop capable. That is the first fair weather turn in 1940. This simulates that a Fallschirmjäger unit disabled the fortress on the first few days of Case Yellow. The Germans landed gliders on top of the big fortress to blow up the main fortress guns.

Eben Emael means the Germans have to go via Holland in 1939 to bypass the fortress to get at Brussels.

Another change is that the efficiency loss for the French units will not take place on the turn Belgium is DoW'ed, but on the turn Brussels falls provided the weather is fair.

Turn 13. April 28, 1940 Axis. Holland and Belgium Invaded!

Historically, the French and British at the start of Case Yellow initiated the Dyle Plan and moved into Belgium to meet the main German thrust there in what they thought was to be a replay of World War I. Of course we all know what happened. The Germans initially moved armor units into Belgium to reinforce the Allies' belief that this was were the main thrust was going to be. However; this was a feint and the main thrust took place through the Ardennes forest, which the allies thought was impassable to armor and mechanized units. Only when the Germans had broken through and were threatening to encircle the British BEF and French forces in Belgium were they ordered to pull back. The British and French soldiers were baffled by these orders and had no clue that they were about to be cut off from most of France. This pull back was complicated by the larger number of refugees fleeing the Germans in Belgium and Holland and clogging the roads. However, I get ahead of myself on this. You'll have to wait until next turn to see what I'm talking about.

I really dislike dark blue colour since it has low visibility: wouldn´t it be better to use light blue (the same used for paratroopers when ready to paradrop)?

The same for violet: I find this colour also confussing.

I have to say that I really doubt about if this change is useful. Instead of it I find it confussing: let´s think about the different colours for entrechment levels and now this for effectiveness. May be it could be difficult for someone to memorize it. :(

      Hi,

As far as entrenchment goes it has no dot (0) , Black (1), orange(2) which covers about what 90% of the land hexes.

This is just a quick visual to help the player.

Coloring follow the simple rule of the sequence in the rainbow. Red is the lowest and violet the highest. That is a simple system to remember. It's used in CeaW too, at least partially. The sequence is: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. That is 7 values. We have black as lowest below red and burgundy above violet as highest for max entrenchment in capitals.

Green can't be used for strength since some terrain is green. Light blue is for paradrop ready paras. Light blue can't be used in sea hexes.

We might go with silver above white to make it viewable in all hexes

      Hi all,

It's very interesting to see the new features being tested presented in this thread. I'd like to give some input on using colours.

Please make sure all the features use the same colour system. Same colour for low, same colour for high and so on. How many unit's characteristics is there going to be visualised using colour now? EFF, ENT, EXP, ammount of possible upgrades and something else?

Colours from rainbow. I'm ready to put my head on the block that using colour range from infrared/thermography images such as this Image would more easy to recognize and digest by the most of players than the "rainbow scale".

What's the planned/tested scale and limits for the EFF colours?

      Sincerely,

Actually, I quite agree with Augustus. A scale ranging from darker colors to brighter is actually a no-brainer for easy identification.
This is quite similar to the astronomical color classifications as well, which range from black/gray/purple/red/orange/yellow(the earth's sun is this of course)/white and finally blue.
I would suggest you could also use silver and gold if they can be distinctive enough from the other colors. OBAFGKMRNS signifies the major astronomical classifications, with colors associated with each letter.

Point is that we already have the lowest values set from CeaW. That is red, orange, yellow and white. The three first are the first colors of the rainbow. People are already used to them for damage and efficiency. The question is if we need anything to show efficiency above 60. Entrenchments use the full rainbow scale, but most are 1 or 2. Only cities, fortresses and capitals can show higher values.

We might keep as is for efficiency since it focuses only on showing the degree of inefficiency. Above 60 means the unit is healthy. So what Ronnie showed was just an experiment. It may not see the light of day

Great News! Jim (Happycat) our resident historical expert has agreed to review my writeups for accuracy and will add to them as he sees fit. This game and AAR has actual turned out to be more fun than I thought because of the historical bent that I've taken. In addition to providing a forum for folks to discuss aspects of the game itself (e.g., what color scheme to use for effectiveness), I have found that adding some historical background to the game turn writeups to be enjoyable, and hopefully informative. In addition to the discussions on the mechanics of the game, which I highly encourage to continue, I'd like for people to contribute any relevant historical background. I'm American (i.e., from the USA) and Jim's Canadian so our background will have that perspective. It would be nice if we could capture relevant background from folks with different perspectives. We (Jim and I) are capturing the game turns complete with relevant historical background in a document, which I can make available along the way and certainly at the end. Again, more perspectives on the relevant history would be fun and certainly educational for me and others.

Turn 14. May 18, 1940 Axis. Belgium Falls. The Germans Push Into Belgium. Mussolini Declares War on the Allies.

Where is the French armor corps? Where are the French infantry corps?

One big change is that allied units in France or Belgium now suffer the 20 point effectiveness loss when Belgium falls instead of when Belgium is invaded. Also, this loss is applied independent of weather compared to before where the 20 point loss was only applied if Belgium was invaded in fair weather.

Note the different colors used for effectiveness.
