Can determined horse deploy & operate in a 3 front rank, 1 rear rank formation prior to expanding in melee ?

That's how I've been running them. Rear rank may have a different number of bases.

I find it gives me more staying power vs all those cavaliers who usually under dead.'s command run 4 wide.

Rules are quite clear. The strict formation is a esentially foot units.

is a perfectly legal mounted rectangle. Assuming they are facing left.

One of those rules that is correct, but looks wrong when you see it.

Only because the figures are fixed on rectangular bases. In reality the rear base would be spread across the full width of the formation.

It is best not to take the appearance on the table too literally.

When it comes to Mr Hazelbark, it is best to take nothing to literally. :)
