Native American gun use

Post by rbodleyscott »

I have not been able to find any very specific information on the introduction of firearms amongst many of the native American tribes (apart from those I have so far given some).

Did any of the other groupings have enough guns during our period to justify a BG (or more) in their list? If so, from what date?

Also, this business of the Iroquois multi-loading their muskets with pistol balls (resulting in shorter range and rating them as Arquebus) - I have not found an independent source on this. If it is apocryphal, it may be better to rate them as Musket. (Either from 1632, or from 1668).

I am rewriting the Eastern Woodland Culture list to allow Warriors to have half their BG with Musket capability from 1668.

The alternative would be to allow the whole BG Musket* capability, but that might be a bit much.

The Osprey on American Woodland Indians says that the gun replaced the bow throughtout most of the eastern regions between about 1640 and the late C17th. Nothing about loading with pistol balls.

Coming to the conclusion we should ditch the pistol balls thing,

Yes, it sounds like balls to me.
