Toggling Sounds Failure

Post by Morbio »

Having got FoG working on my new Windows 7 PC (thanks for all the help!) I was resetting the configuration to my preferences, e.g. grid on, music off, etc. and in doing so I accidently clicked 'sound off'. However, when I try to set it back on it doesn't work.

Just to be clear, it's not a volume, speaker, sound card issue. When music is on it plays fine.

I've tried closing down FoG and re-launching with no success.

I'm loathe to try reinstalling!

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Trying setting sound effects and music to on and the volume setting to max in the preferences window. Does that restore the sound?

I've just tried it with music on and both volumes at max - no sound, but music is playing fine.

as we're at this, I can report a very LOW sound level in FoG compared with the rest of the system sounds/programs' sounds. At 50% of the sound slider, there's no audible sound at all. so, basically, the sound is only scaling on the superior half of the sound slider, the inferior half not being of any use.

Any progress on this one? Whilst it may seem like a cosmetic issue it is important for games with FoW on. It's the sounds of marching that gives a clue that there are units you can't see on the move.

Thanks for all your help.

Morbio.

As I recall there is a preference document somewhere that stores your preferences. In the past people have had problems with it not updating. I suggest tracking it down and deleting it or changing the text to allow sounds.

You need to turn on hidden files Then

Close the game
GoTo
Documents & Settings / Users Folder (depends on windows version)
Your User Name Folder
Application Data/App Data Folder (depends on windows version)
Roaming Folder (Windows 7/Vista)
Slitherine Folder
Delete common-prefs

Restart the game
These resets all the preferences setting

Show hidden files is on already. I can't find any Documents & Settings folder. I've searched for common-prefs and can't find this. I've searched for Roaming and can't find this either.

My PC is Windows 7. Can you give more detailed instructions? The only reference to a Slitherine folder I can fiind is in Program Files (x86).

On XP you'd go to My Computer and then open up Local Disk C and the folder should be there towards the top. Don't know about 7 but I followed the path from there and the pref doc.

Thanks for the directions to the file.

I renamed the file (just in case I needed to get it back) and launched the game. It was back with default settings except no sound.

Here's what's in the new common-prefs file:

"blnAutoEndPhase",0
"blnGridVisible",1
"blnHelpVisible",1
"blnHexIDsVisible",0
"blnInstantUnitTooltips",0
"blnPlayMusic",1
"blnPlaySound",1
"blnShowFPS",0
"colorEnemy",&hFF0000
"colorFriendly",&h00FF00
"dblHexesPerTick",0.09526
"dblPauseMultiplier",1.
"intVolMusic",100
"intVolSound",100

Clearly PlaySound is on, but it's not working :(

Maybe the issue is with your sound card?

I don't rule that out, but I think it is unlikely. The music plays, other music plays, I get sound with streamed music, with watching videos, general PC (Windows) sounds, so I struggle to think why my sound card (or PC in general) should play everything except the FoG battle sounds.

I'm wondering if the file that contains the sounds is missing / corrupted? Is there a way to check this? I'm thinking that the game is either running the sounds (but they are silent) or that it is failing to run the sounds but it carries on anyway.

I think so. I searched for OpenAL and it found a folder called OpenAL, a DLL file and something called OpenALweax

This bug has been fixed with the 1.40 update. :D

I can only assume there was a corrupt file somewhere.
