Why 30mm deep bases for 28mm infantry figures?

This seems odd to me as it's substantially more than needed for the average figure.

What was the thinking behind this as opposed to a 20mm standard depth?

Also, if you choose to go with the 20mm depth, what are the advantages/disadvantages to look out for ?

Having never painted or played TYW?ECW, I've enjoyed painting up the army. But I can just manage to squeeze the 28mm Warlords musketeers onto 30mm deep! They wouldn't fit the 20mm bases!

I noticed that when in two ranks, foot will turn 90 degrees and maintain the same positions (i.e., the 2 ranks are 60mm deep>turn>same frontage).

A non-argument that crops up regularly. If using 20mm, just turn three units and keep the same position.

I found that 4 soldiers on 6*2cm is a bit cramped - to a degree that they certainly would have problems if they did that in real life. If you then rank them up it really becomes crowded. On 6*3cm the ranks look better.

A problem however is that there is no equivalent to the plastic Renedra bases in 6*3cm. I have to cut my own...

I've got plenty of Warlord, Renegade, Bicorne, Perry and Old Glory 28mm ECW Infantry and they all fit fine on 20mm x 20mm bases.

I'm not sure why you're having a problem with the Warlord.

But the cramping is due to trying to fit 4 models on a 60mm base, no? I agree that trying to fit a 28mm figure on a 15mm wide space doesn't work very well....

Yep. 6*2cm looks cramped when ranked up with four minis, so I build them just with 3.
I am glad that FOG-R went the way of 6*3 cm, and I do base these with four per base (even when the reusability for other single-mini-systems is thus a bit limited).

Well, they're both 60mm wide. So I assume you're placing them offset on the 30mm deep base so that they're actually getting more than just 15mm each laterally? (i.e. there's some overlap)?

The extra 10mm lets you have a bit of room to stagger bases.

I've been trimming the pike bases so that they fit more easily. In some cases, like the horse, it's more a matter of rider feet bumping into each other, trying to play footsies on the battlefield!

The only other thing I'd point out is that the base size given in the reference section does say that you can use 20mm deep for infantry and I belive gives the option of 3 figures per base even for pike which is what I think I will do as four models on a 60mm front is too crowded even if you can stagger them IMHO.

I know it mentions the 20mm. I've enjoyed the 30mm, that's all. A nice change from squeezing Romans onto bases. I think the 3 horse to a base is still a tad tricky at times.

As for numbers, I like the pikes with 4 and the shot with 3. All a matter of taste!

The base sizes and number of figures have also been chosen to be the same as DBR
