Restoration British

Post by marshalney2000 »

I see that the highland companies have been changed to musket*. I know all other highlanders have this but in the case of the highland companies they all would have had a musket while in the clan units only those in the front ranks at best would have been so equiped hence my proposals for full musket status. They are pretty in few in numbers anyway so would propose we change back.

Nik does not appear to have answered this point.

However, John, bear in mind that the French are similarly rated despite being fully supplied with muskets.

If we decide to keep them as Musket* (which seems reasonable on the same basis as the French), then the blurb needs a tweak.

"Regular units were often accompanied by small bodies of native Highlanders with traditional weaponry. Although these were better supplied with muskets than clan formations, we still rate them as Musket*, Impact Foot because we assume that they retained the usual Highland enthusiasm for close combat. "

Or somesuch.

I think we have to go with Musket* for consistency with other troops.

Nik, as already indicated to Richard in view of our previous discussion on the covenanting musketeers, I am happy to go with musket star.

Were the Tangiers garrison issued with bayonets as early as 1662?

The Osprey on the army (which is OK I think) says the bayonet was recorded in use in Tangiers in 1662/3
