Mounted troops: I am just learning the rules. And my first question is about mounted troops. Can’t understand the difference between the different types of mounted d troops, apart of fully armoured Gendarmes and light horse that have a different move all the others have the same move but different point cost. In a first check can’t see the combat differences between horse, cavaliers etc. Thanks in advance for the replies

There are many differences which only a full read through of the rules will reveal.

Here are a few:

Light Horse can always Evade. However they only get 1 dice per 2 bases when shooting or in close combat against non-light troops and Dragoons.

Cavalry can Evade if in a single rank of bases. However, they (like Light horse) suffer a -1 CT modifier when shot at by firearms.

Horse are the basic mounted type and have no special abilities.

Gendarmes, Determined Horse and Cavaliers get 2 dice per front rank base (only) in melee, which means they don't have to form up in 2 ranks to fight at full effect.

Gendarmes and Cavaliers are more dififcult to rally from Pursuit than other types.

There isn't really any difference between Gendarmes and Cavaliers apart from armour and combat capabilities. They could have shared a type, but giving them them separate types avoids anomalous/anachronistic terminology - it would have been a bit silly to call Prince Rupert's cavaliers "Gendarmes", and equally silly to call Francis's I's gendarmes "Cavaliers".

Then grade all your cavalry (except any Croats or Hungarians) as Determined Horse and you should be correct.

Is based on our Seven Year collection, but doesn’t try to be accurate, is intend only to learn the rules. I fear I let myself a little carried away, so long we don’t play a SYW battle! And ended with large armies than intended, but we always play long games, normally around 3 or 4 days!

hehe, our learning battles have been using all types of ancient troops.. The fins where armored Gauls, pike was biblical MF spearmen and mf bowmen for shot.. My mounted crossbow were determined horse.. Hungarian cav were carbiners. My MF arabs were merc units.

From the beta rules & lists I would not expect the Det Horse
to have Pistol S

Indeed. And no troops whatsoever have Pistol (S & I & M).

The usual combinations are:

Pistol (S & M) (ooer) but only for earlier troops.
Carbine (S) & Pistol (M)
Pistol (I & M)

I don't know how SYW cavalry should be graded, as it is outside our period, but I suspect Pistol (I & M).

Yes I agree it was a mistake. And as the game is going on Shot pistol prove to be a waste of points! But that apart the game is going very well, maybe an Age of Reason Supplement/Adaptation will not be amiss!
