French 30 Year War

Post by MatthewP »

Has anybody tried this one yet? I was wondering how well the impact foot, musket* category worked.

Used them a couple of times under the beta. Because they are Musket* they will be outshot at close range by "proper" pike and shot BGs so you need to think about how you will ensure they get into hand to hand in the best shape possible - commanders and support for CT modifiers, etc. If they get into hand to hand in good shape they should beat other P&S BGs (other than Swedish brigades who are even more effective at impact).

They did poorly at the 2009 Britcon beta IIRC.

Troops for the decisive IMO, not for the faint hearted.

Hmm, suicidal charges in the face of withering fire. Small chance of success against impossible odds. Death or glory on a grands scale. Sounds great!!! My sort of army.

Cheers

I looked at using regimental guns to counteract the firepower disadvantage. But in the period that regimental guns are allowed, the cavalry is pants. Unless you take a Weimarian ally......

However, it may be better to suck up the firepower disadvantage and get stuck in with more troops.

As a victim of that tragedy the thing that caught me out was that requirement to close with the enemy. Avg BG of 6 having to footslog a long way taking withering fire from all and sundry was grim. Remember, that in that iteration of the rules artillery was considerable more effective (at short range!)... closing with those moscovites whose frontage was covered with light artillery was a wargaming low :(

I remember Sunday afternoon the 2 French armies having to play each other at the bottom of the pile - definately competition punch bags.

thansk
