Unit Graphics

Post by Windycity »

I just started playing FOG after visiting the forums here by default/Battlefield I took to reading the FOG AAR’s and other descriptions of the game play and decided I’d take a chance ?
I’ve only got a week under my belt but I’m having great fun with this little gem !

Ether way what I was originally posting about is, the first thing I noticed was the contrast of the game board (ground textures) and the units ( real photos of miniatures )

Here is a couple shots after I removed the camera flash and soften out the edges a bit, they no long have that "glowing" line around the units image.... :D

The second picture is more 'realistic' but a little dull. Something halfway between the two would probably look better.

How did you adjust the image(s), if you don't mind letting us know?

Dropped the Contrast 2% (glowing white cutout line)
Drop the Lightness 10% (will brighten the color a bit)
Blur 5% (softens the image)

Sharper is not always better, especially when using real photos against rendered backgrounds.
I was more concerned with removing the “cut out” look of the glowing white line around the units image.

The second is good if they fight at evening.

Agree the first is too bright. They fight with bright lights pointing at their faces.

Maybe we could get different illumination the same time as visibility ranges are introduced. :)

It would surely be a huge job to alter all the images (I'm looking in the 'units-group' folder as I think you must be). Obviously, each and every unit type has it's own set of images taken from each of the six directions)

What software are you using? My viewer is Nero Photosnap viewer, which shows the image quite nicely and allows a great deal of image adjustment - too many options to list here! But what I'm thinking is that any major change would only look right if all the units on screen had the same effect.

I would love to see sharper images of the units, so you could zoom in without them becoming blurred as they do. Another wish would be to have slight differences in the figures of a unit, for example the six figure squad of legionaries having slight variations in their tunic colour. I've never been a fan of model soldiers where each unit has absolutely identical figures.

Identical figures the that is what most miniature games like to go for. I don't mind some variation but when it comes to the mini's making sure they are user friendly or not stupid poses is my main concern.
PC gamers don't have to worry about making them all fit on shallow bases....

Not really, it took me about a hour to edit them all.

I’m using photo shop pro which allowed me to load all the images at once and then edit individually at my pre-set edit settings, it was just click and save.
There are plenty of free image editing D/L on the web that could handle the job.
