Warfare 2010

Post by TimChild »

Hi guys,

We have been contacted by a number of potential entrants who have heard rumours that Warfare is already full. This is not true! Please send your entries in, and tell your friends and travelling companions to do the same!!

Entries sent before 4th October need only pay £12, but entries after that date must pay £18.

The three competitions this year are:-

Field of Glory 650 pts 25mm (Oath of Fealty, Eternal Empire, Storm of Arrows).

Field of Glory 800 pts 15mm (Rome - Rise of Rome, Legions Triumphant, Immortal Fire).

Field of Glory 800 pts 15mm (Empires of the Dragon)

Where relevant, armies indicated in the list-book Appendices and Lost Scrolls will also be permitted.

The deadline for submission of FOG lists is 31 October, and these should be sent to me at t_and_e.child@tiscali.co.uk.

Thanks in advance!

Warfare 2010 - Reading, 20/21 November 2010

Post by TimChild »

Hi chaps,

Another reminder about Warfare. We have had lots of entries to date, but there is still plenty of space for FOG. Entry cost is £12 for entries received before 4 October (which is very soon...) and £18 thereafter. Please get your entries to Ian Colby a.s.a.p. (if not sooner!) as I would personally rather have lots of happy gamers spending the extra £6 on the trade stands. :o)

Lists do not have to come until the end of October (they come to me for checking, as usual), but entries need to get to Ian Colby by 4 October if you are to take advantage of the £12 price. His address is on the WAR website: http://www.readingwargames.co.uk/news.asp?id=74

Please pass the message on to all your friends and clubmates thinking of coming, as I don't want anyone to think I haven't been reminding you of the dates!

The rules for the FOG competitions at Warfare are now up. See:-

http://www.readingwargames.co.uk/news.asp?id=81

They are the same as last year, in essence, just the lists for the themes having changed. I apologise for the delay in getting them up, caused by personal incompetence on my part, and holidays/family illness on the part of the WAR web-sters at just the wrong moment from my perspective!

Still lots of room for FOG (as of the information I have most recently, the DBMMers are pushing FOG for entry-numbers, so pride is at stake :o) ) and for FOW, so please send your entries a.s.a.p. FOG (but not FOW) lists to come to me please by the end of October.

Cheers,

I spoke to Ian Colby last night. All Warfare competition periods are now FULL. :D

There are one or two people who have sent me lists but seem not to have sent cheques to Ian. I am trying to sort those out to see whether we can squeeze an extra table in somewhere, but will be contacting those people direct.

In the meantime, I am waiting for lists from:-

Peter Cross
*Dave Fairbrother
Keith Pullen
*David Bannister
Richard Collins
Chris Proudfoot
Dave Finnegan
Ian Stewart
Graham Evans
*Peter Townsend
Nik Gaukroger
Richard Bodley-Scott (but Richard and Nik are player umpiring, and Nik's volunteered to float between all three comp.s, so some excuses allowed there)

I have e-mailed most of these direct, but if anyone has an e-mail address for the *ed names, please could they send it to me. Of course, if any of the above have not sent their lists because they can't make it after all, please could you let me know a.s.a.p., as we may well be able to fill the space.

Cheers,

Thanks to everyone who has sent their lists to me - down to the final few now, and then I can get R & R published so that you can all start planning and plotting (and sweating and cursing your own terrible choice.

So, if anyone is able to put me in touch with, or themselves to poke the following, it would be much appreciated:-

Dave Fairbrother
David Bannister
Richard Collins (I have e-mailed Richard, but no reply so I don't know whether my addy for him is up to date)
Peter Townshend (I have been given an e-mail for Peter, but he has not replied)

We are over-subscribed and therefore I have at least three guys in reserve at the moment. There are often drop-outs in the last week (life gets in the way of gaming, sadly) - if any of the above (or anyone else) are not coming, could you please let me know urgently. (This is not a call for volunteers not to play!!)

Parking for Warfare - bring £1 coins!!

Post by TimChild »

As in the last few years, sadly parking at the Rivermead is not free, although we have been able to bargain it down to half price. You have to buy your parking for both days, so bring plenty of £1 coins! Each day (and you must do it same day) you then go to reception with the "receipt" half of your parking ticket (leaving the "parking" part in the car on display) and reception will refund half your parking fee.

Cheers,

Or, even better, walk there having drunk lots of beer the night before and stayed in a local hostelry.

Sounds like a plan - one that I know that the Irish DBMM contingent has got down to a T. :o)

Thanks Tim. Some of us are still bitter over gettting a ticket when they introduced charges at Dunstable and no one warned us!

No observations? OK then.

Even in a restricted period not looking good is it. Thirteen different choices but two armies not in the actual book.

Looks like some people are taking part of the name rather literally ? Seems to be a Swiss/Free company shortage to me.

OT - last time I got a parking ticket I managed to persuade the local authority to let me off. I suspect that they thought I'd get the sympathy vote from the Adjudicator once they heard that my ticket had run out because I had been stuck in front of an over-running bench of Magistrates while prosecuting someone who had been mis-treating her dog, on behalf of a well-known national animal charity.

Not a feature I like to emphasise while trying to persuade someone that it's unfair for me to have to pay £50. Whatever the reality of life at the high-street end of the UK legal profession may be, people only ever hear about the Hollywood-style lawyering and City bonuses, and therefore to make assumptions about BMWs and swimming-pools and such-like...

In preparing your case, I suggest a better wording would have been

"while prosecuting , on behalf of a well-known national animal charity, someone who had been mis-treating her dog"

Although I do like the image.

13 different armies from 16 players seems good to me - why the fact 2 are from other books is a bad thing is beyond me. Strange view IMO.

Only if you want to be. Plenty of troops to use aggressively in the list. It would have been my choice if my figures weren't so tatty and in need of much TLC

Its not so much that there isn't variety - though I make it 13 from 18, but that there are so many missing altogether, including a lot of armies that were reasonably common in DBM (so the figures are out there).

Quite a lot of defensive spear though, which I assume is the USP. Also, its another example of the Christian Nubian/Valentinian III syndrome where a fairly mediocre army that never did very much somehow ends up with top billing.

I don't see that it has top billing - who is saying that?

Don't misread defensive spear as being a defensive troop type - I used 40 bases of them in my Akkadian at roll call and they pretty much pressed forwards continuously!
