Borger (Axis) vs Ronnie (Allies) with GS v1.10f (No Ronnie)

Post by Peter Stauffenberg »

This is my first AAR and here is my initial strategy against Ronnie.

Turn 1: Damage Poland as hard as possible while railing 2 corps to the Danish border. Build one General lab with focus in Industry.

Turn 2: Finish off Poland, invade Denmark and rail an armor and 1 corps to the Dutch border. Build an Infantry lab.

Turn 3: Finish off Denmark in needed and invade Holland unless mud weather to secure Arnhem and all hexes around Hague. Build an Air lab. Rail
1 mech and another good unit to the Dutch border.

Turn 4: Finish off Holland and build an Armor lab.

Turn 5: Build a Naval lab with focus in Submarine.

Turn 6 or 7: dependent upon income and repairs. Build a tactical bomber.

Turn 7 or 8: Build a fighter.

Turn 9+: Build labs in 1940 in the following sequence. Armor, Infantry, Air, General. Attack Belgium in the first fair weather turn.

The reason I go for Sitzkrieg instead of Blitzkrieg is because Ronnie rarely reinforces France with British units. So I can afford to make a devastating attack against Belgium and then storm towards Paris. If I suspect my opponent to reinforce France I rail more units in turn 2 and 3 and go for Belgium in October 1939.

I build another strategic bomber and 3 more submarines in the Spring / Summer of 1940 before I start building the units needed for Barbarossa. I try to get subs to the Halifax area so I can spy where the Canadian units go. I attack the transports if I get a good chance, but not if they're heavily escorted. I need to keep my subs healthy to damage his convoys while he's starved for PP's.

Here is the result of turn 1:
Image

The goal of turn 1 was to damage or destroy the Polish corps units so they can't counter attack. The Posen corps is screened and the southeastern corps is pinned so it can't get far. I also made sure my armor could attack the Polish fighter so it can't intercept on turn 2. This means I can rebase my fighter to the west on turn 2 and only use my tac bomber against Warsaw. The other tac bomber will be used against Copenhagen in addition to the DD, BB and 2 corps units. The other fighter can be used if needed. If not it will rebase to the west.

I got a pretty normal first turn result in Poland. Runstedt was placed on a corps in the west so he can strengthen the units that will be railed there. He will be used against Holland soon.

1939 - Turn 2

Post by Peter Stauffenberg »

This turn I invaded Denmark and captured it. I used the BB and DD to shore bombard and then a tactical bomber to inflict quite a bit of damage. The invasion corps landed adjacent to Copenhagen and inflicted even more damage so the other corps moving via Jutland and Fyn could capture the capital.

Warsaw fell easily to a tactical bomber and 4 land attacks. My first attack suffered 1:3 losses with expected 3:1, but that's life. If you do your work well on turn 1 then turn 2 is really easy.

No northern sub spotted a juicy 21 PP convoy and will attack it next turn. The other 2 subs entered the North Sea and sailed to the Scapa Flow area. They can return if Ronnie wants to retaliate against the German BB, but usually he sends his Royal Navy units towards Canada.

I rebased 3 corps units and both fighters so I will have 4 corps, 3 garrisons, 2 fighters and 1 strat bomber to attack Holland with next turn unless I get mud. That should be enough to isolate Hague so I can take it out during the winter.

I built an Infantry and Air lab as well before I repaired a corps and mech.

Turn 3. October 11th 1939

Post by Peter Stauffenberg »

Fair weather so Holland was attacked. The result was so-so. At least I captured Arnhem and depleted Hague a bit. Not having the tac bombers available hurt the punch. Hopefully I can get fair weather next turn so Holland can fall quickly.

The northern convoy was attacked for 6 PP's and an Armor lab was built. I managed to repair one armor and mech unit as well.

Turn 4: October 31st 1939

Post by Peter Stauffenberg »

October 31st 1939 and Fair weather again. :)

My sub barely missed the British convoy it attacked the last turn:

After the sub moved it got within spotting range of one of my other 2 subs so it will be destroyed next turn unless I get mud and forgot where it was seen due to a lower spotting range.

Holland fell as expected and now the situation looks like:

In addition to attacking Hague I let a fighter bombard a garrison to lure the French fighter into intercepting. It didn't so it was safe to send the strategic bomber against Paris. Unfortunately it only scored one hit. I deliberately attacked a garrison with my figher to get the 1:0 odds instead of 1:1 against corps units. I didn't expect to do much damage, but I wanted to make sure the French fighter couldn't intercept my bomber since my fighters don't have range to Paris yet.

I build a Naval lab with focus on submarines. The units will now move in position to make a deadly strike against Belgium in the Spring. I will need another fighter and tactical bomber so these units will be built before any more labs.

Turn 5 November 20th 1939

Fair weather this turn too. Only action in Europe was strategic bombing of Paris which inflicted 2 steps.

2 subs depleted a convoy and the last sub decided to lurk west of Ireland and just missed being rammed by another juicy convoy.

You risked to be intercepted with RAF one by the way.
Also maybe its better to bomb Lorrein? Has no flack (by the way I think that flack should be added to oil fields and mines, because why its harder to place flacks there, then in city?) and in range of your fighters.

Oilfields and mines have flak in v1.10. Oilfields similar to capitals and mines similar to cities.

The reason I went after Paris was that I would only attack 1-2 times before bad weather. I inflict more PP's against an 8 PP capital than a 5 PP mine. I got a total of 3 hits from 2 attacks and that meant Ronnie lost more PP's from my Paris attack. Early in the war every PP is critical for the French.

I know that the RAF can intercept too, but they rarely will intercept attacks in central France. They must be rebased to France to do that. I would not have bombarded Paris if the French fighter had intercepted the garrison attack. Since the French fighter didn't then it was probably on sentry duty and then it was very likely also the British fighter was on sentry duty.

I know Ronnie's playing style and he usually tries to avoid losing steps on his air units until Case Yellow has started in the Spring. Then he has a better chance to delay the fall of France. He knows often try to lure the Allies into a conflict before the Spring of 1940. The Axis usually benefits from that.
