If you want to move them about at the start of the game - but once unlimbered they cannot relimber.

However, most people deploy them unlimbered, as you can deploy them last, meaning you should be able to deploy them somewhere useful. Deploying them limbered wastes good shooting time.

Hence, I don't even own any limbers, and I have not seen anyone deploy guns limbered recently.

In short, don't bother with them.

TBH since you can deploy them up to 15mu there dos'nt seem a point to having them limbered. As Richard says a lot of people place them last so by then you should have a target to hit.

Reading the various posts so far, it seems the only reason to deploy them limbered would be if your army only has medium guns and your opponent has heavy.

Then you can move them so as to get within range of the enemy guns.

Counterbattery fire is pretty pointless as it requires 6s to hit. And if the enemy guns are a 2 base BG (which they will be) then you will need 2 hits to make them take a death roll.

In short, it is a waste of time.

I will not tell you about the 5 hits I got on 6s with one BG in the Britcon practise then... My opponent was not very impressed with 5 straight 6s on 5 dice...

Strangely (or maybe not :D ), this is also historically accurate for the period. From my reading few armies moved larger guns during the battle. The heavier the gun the less likely it moved.

So that's cool.

I guess this was the infancy of actual cannons etc, and they had not managed to get them to the point of being mobile yet so park them and save your money on those silly limbers. Wasn't really all that anxious to try and find 25mm limbers and see what the price would have been any way.
Fog R is going to be more cost efficient for us games :P

IIRC at least for the 30 TYW period the guns were moved by civvy hauliers who placed the guns and then disapeared into the camp when the fighting started.

The only reason we had limbers at all is that there were a few battles where guns were moved from their original deployment site - e.g. some of the French artillery at Ravenna 1512. However, even that was before the main battle (other than artillery exchanges) actually started - and the Imperialists were dug in, so initially not inclined to advance, thus giving time for the redeployment. In fact the main purpose of moving the guns was to enfilade the Imperialists to force them out of their defensive position.

So, if you think your opponent is likely to be an extreme corner-sitter, bring some limbers, otherwise don't bother.

Thanks Chaps, limbers are rather tedious! I was influenced by the rather good right up by the Madaxeman where in at least one photo a sneaky little limber was sat behind a bty.
