Units at Britcon

Post by david53 »

Hi There

I was wondering if those players who attended would maybe like to share some of their experiences about either their army or a troop type just a thought for those that could'nt get there.

I'll start my failure to work out the correct place Carbine Cavalry should go or do when they got their. They have to get in close to shoot thus leaving themsleves open to being charged. The time I tried(against Mick) to move up to some determined horse I shot missed was charged next go lost a base went disrupted in the impact lost a further base in the melee and broke all in one go. Good going I though.

Dragoons:

Probably best used in 4s rather than 3s. Although 4s can be somewhat unwieldy, 3s have the disadvantage that they must test cohesion every time they suffer a hit.

Winged Lancers:

Your opponent will try and take these on with his Pike and Shot rather than his mounted - so you need a plan to break into the P&S units (without this you will end up near the bottom of the table ... eg see my performance at Britcon).

Bow armed mounted:

My cunning plan was to disrupt enemy mounted with my bow and deliver the coup de grace with the Winged chappies. Needs better coordination than I could manage - and ignores the basic issue that firepower in this game is more about death rolls than cohesion tests, so by the time I had disrupted a unit my BG was down to half strength and heading home

Dragoons:

Agree with Richard units of four are the way to go. It seemed like three's would be OK because as Average they break on the same number of death rolls as BGs of four - but this is one case where the cohesion tests become important, probably because Dragoons need to skirmish around in the fire zone for most of the game.

Death Rolls:

Don't roll ones. I'm not usually superstitious, but I did actually buy new dice on the Sunday morning - not that it helped

I grew to like these after failing to do any damage to Richards Mass Cornish Infantry advance, they smashed up a Swedish Regiment before it got half way(Tiims bad dice) But overall it makes a good part of the army allowing you to force the game, you can't ignore them if they are banging away every turn.

Dave, not just my bad dice - it was also that you used them well. It tried to get at them and hurt them but it was like trying to catch a wet bar of soap.
