How Are The Rules Coming Along?
A question for the writers of the rules - how do you think they are coming along and how much work do you think they need before they are ready?
Thats not an easy one Bruce
In terms of major mechanics, its all about there.
Playtesting and bug fixing can go on for ever(if you allow it) but clearly we want to avoid as much as possible the need for major clarifications
Rewording, paraphrasing and editing is a major task ahead. Localising photo editing and diagrams are only now getting attention.
So a lot still to do

Clearly a lot of production work to be done however close we are in terms of the game itself. The pace is certainly going up not down, whatever that means.
Actually a good question to put back to you Bruce as a tester....how close do you think they are? Any views? Overall sense of dvelopment and progress having played 7? games and had vs1/2/3?

I am glad you asked Simon. My question was really intended to spark a quick debate between the writers and testers to make sure that we were all in agreement about where the rules are. And it seems about right.
I think the core mechanisms are in place and work well. There is some fine tuning to be done, but nothing drastic. The writing of the rules needs some work, although they are not bad at all - certainly I would be happy going into a friendly competition with them, assuming common sense could prevail in most cases. Probably the areas that I would say need the most attention are definitions (for example "Targettable Bases" for shooting) - but Stephen Finn has more to say about this topic and how it could be done well, more diagrams (which I am more than happy to help) - in fact I reckon the rules could do with 3-4 times as many diagrams than they have at the moment and more "game" examples. The best rules have a running game that they use to highlight points. This would also add some production value and interest to reading the rules. The rules start this process well with the example Romans versus Celts, but you could use this as a theme throughout the rules in conjunction with diagrams.

Thanks Bruce.
The authors are working on batches of diagrams at present. There are 40 currently WIP (20 near finished as drafts and 20 at first interation), and another 20 photographed but not yet converted into diagrams. It's looking like 60-80 in total at a guess, although clearly this will depend on the production plans etc that JD is working on.
It's a big job as you can imagine. Hopefully gives you all a sense of current direction we are going in this department.
More anon.
