Locked Campaigns Are Bad

Post by Spechtmeise »

I have to admit I am not an fan of having to unlock campaigns, especially as the campaigns are really a sequence of scripted scenarios. I am a grown man, and if I decide I want to try my hand at the Bulge campaign I ought to be free to do so.
I have played essentially great games such as Men of War where I eventually lost interest after a while because it just got too tedious.
What do the others think?

Locked levels are in all games from Tetris to 3D Shooters. It's been that way for generations for a reason.

Not in Panzer General and countless others. What is the reason for locking campaigns?

I am tired, seems I thought you meant locked-maps.

I suppose it may not be that bad to remove locks from campaigns.

I have no complaints, I LIKE being made to defeat the game or suck it up.

I don't play wargames to fiddle, I play them for the challenge.

While it is a fairly common mechanic, I can see that certain players in this space might want to explore some of the campaign environments more than others.

On the other hand, without having played through the Desert (at least) you will pretty much get pounded in the Bulge.

Perhaps completing the Desert campaign can unlock both Normandy and Bulge?

I too would love to just be able to dive in and immerse myself in any scenario, at my own will, w/o having to go through each mission on order..... Even if it means getting my butt kicked by not going in order, especially given this is a beta test, and i would think you;d want input on all the missions as soon as possible, which cannot be take place if all of us must go 1 mission by 1 mission in order....
To me, it would only make sense to use locked missions if each unit and each crew carried over to the next mission,,,, thus, a given unit that gets promoted, remains that way into the next scenario and so on... also, linking the scenarios to previous scores, would allow the end game to show progress as a whole in the entire front, ie.. you just lost 3 battles in a row, the axis thus now have a tactical victory in the theater of operations so far, unless you win the next one, you lose the war, kind of thing...

The editor is great, and i truly love the patterns of the off map stuff. Great job !
Any chance of us being able to mod a unit's characterstics... like make a king tiger into a Maus....? ie can we mod and create our own units, or, mod the capabilities of the units provided? This would be great, and there are a lot of ww 2 games of this sort that allow one to do so
thanks!
cheers!

It's a little odd for this beta, as we added it in quite late (was always supposed to be in, just didn't get done!) - ideally we'd have gotten feedback on the difficulty when playing in the correct order.

You can create new units with ease - including models should you so wish. We'll be providing an exporter for MAX and explanations on how to include your own.

Editing stats is as simple as creating a campaign, copying the squads.csv file into the campaign dir, and editing away!

Cheers
