In 214BC, in Hispania, Publius Scipio with only one legion found himself facing over 20,000 Carthaginians and their allies. He managed to slip away from the majority of these, but was caught by the Punic cavalry, elephants, and skirmishers out in the open. The Romans were eventually able to fight their way back through to their camp, where they rejoined the main Roman army.
