Fog of war

Post by jre »

We have several questions after our first game, but I will try to space them. So I will focus on the initial phases of the battle.

We wonder if it would be possible to misguide a bit the opponent in the scouting. If you have a clear advantage, telling the bases just gives the enemy information (you can estimate the cavalry/light horse ratio in a Pecheneg), as it does when you clearly have lost (say, against a steppe nomad) so they know your scouting troops.

As well, we considered exactly what information has to be provided to the opponent concerning troop quality and general quality, as very often those qualities are not easy to identify in the figurine. We assumed that total information was the better choice.

Finally, rather than using an extra sheet just to note possible flank marches, we consider the same base system used for Ambushes could be used to note flank marches, adding a "counter" rather than an external sheet.

One last detail concerning flank marches. An infantry unit in ambush on close terrain, if some flanking mounted group enters within 6 MU, will evade out of its cover. It does not feel right, and we feel ambush counters (and the troops under them) were exempt from the compulsory evade.

More later.

We did have originally that you could declare as many or few LH as scouts as you wanted. It meant you had to have an order. We are wondering whether it gives away too much information at present.

We could leave it at what would be visible and make people guess the rest but this might caues confusion and upset at times. What if we mentioned both as options so those who want to play with some fog of war can do so? I guess from your comments you would prefer this for social games.

An interesting idea thanks. We'll mull that one over.
