Early Danish mounted arqubusiers and reiters

Post by rbodleyscott »

These have the following choice of classification:

Mounted arquebusiers & reiters
Horse Heavily Armoured Average Carbine - Swordsmen
Horse Armoured Average - Impact Pistol Melee Pistol
Horse Armoured Average Shooting Pistol - Swordsmen

I understand the reason for the Impact pistol version, but why do the others have Swordsmen capability rather than Melee pistol capability? If there is a good reason for that, why don't the Impact Pistol ones have Swordsmen capability too?

Why don't the carbine ones get the option to be armoured and the Pistols ones to be Heavily armoured?

Comparing to the reiters in the Trade & Treachery lists we have there:

1543 to 1555 in the Caroline Imperial lists there are reiters with Shooting Pistol, Swordsmen and Shooting Pistol, Melee Pistol. They have Heavily Armoured and Armoured options.

For the reat of the T&T lists we really only have those with Shooting and Melee Pistols - certainly at the dates up to 1587 which this Danish list covers. The danish list would be unusual, but not entirely unique (see the Vasa Swedish who are close neighbours) to have Carbine armed cavalry at the dates of the list, and these could be different from the reiters.

Karsten does mention in the troop notes that they seem to have been more agressive and charged rather than shot, so presumably Impact and Melee Pistol types come from this.

However, there is no indication that armour was any different regardless of behaviour.

Therefore, unless Karsten indicated otherwise I would leave the carbine armed troops as they are, but amedn the reiter (pistol) types to match the usual calssifications.

On reflection, and trying to read Karsten's mind, I suspect that the Swordsmen capability is intended to be an alternative way of reflecting their aggressive behaviour. Makes sense if Melee Pistol capability depends on strict maintenance of formation.

So I suggest we leave his classifications alone.

OK, but will change the armour as that must be a mistake.

Not necessarily, but I am OK either way.

Done it now - on its way.
