Replacing front rank bases

Let's say I have a 8 stand BG with 4 swordsmen bases in the front rank and 4 bow bases in the second rank. I am in combat with one enemy BG to my front. I lose a stand and so remove a swordsman base and replace it with a bow base. In the next round of combat I lose another base. Rather than lose another swordsman base, I am allowed to remove the bow base from the front rank and replace it with another bow base from the rear, right?

Yes - page 116 - any front rank base facing the enemy BG

Which seems fair since the bow bases are crap at HTH so more likely to die. However, if it was a split melee, which it normally will be due to different POA's, and the bow base was fighting something that did no hits and a swordsman base took hits a sworsman base must be removed.
