Light foot stand against cavalry and rear charges

Post by ahuyton »

In a game I am currently playing, Swedish handgunners stand when charged by Danish mounted x-bows. There are no enemy troops behind them. There are friendly cavalry but as light foot can pass through them that should not be a problem.

On a different issue, I haven't quite understood when or if a rear charge automatically downgrades the morale of an enemy unit. I had this today when a unit of heavy weapon foot hit a knight in the rear (the charge was indicated on screen as 'rear') but there was no effect.

A screen shot of the situation with the handgunners would be the best way to get an explanation for why they didn't evade.

On your second issue, from the help on "Front, flanks and rear":
A battle group charged in its rear by a battle group, other than light foot or light horse unless also, light foot or light horse, that started its charge move behind a line extending across the rear of the target battle group will suffer an instant cohesion loss on contact and before any impact combat takes place and may rout automatically on contact.

A battle group charged in its rear by a battle group, other than light foot or light horse unless also, light foot or light horse, will always suffer the maximum combat penalty difference during the impact combat.
Basically the charging unit must start someplace behind the row that the BG being charged is in. The diagram in the on line help is pretty clear how this works. You can get the PoA advantage for attacking the rear without starting the charge from the rear of the unit.

Lights charging rear of lights get rear effect. They do not get rear effect against heavy or medium foot or mounted.

As far as lights holding up heavy foot or mounted. They can hold out for a very long time in bad terrain. (Even in good terrain sometimes) LF seem to have a suprising staying power. LF with bows vs medium foot with bows. (lights are much harder to kill)

I have found those superior Cretan archers can hold off 2-3 heavy units in open for multiple turns...Apparently the bow staves morph into naginatas

If these guys were miniatures, I would paint big S for superman on their chests. Actually lF archers are much better than MF archers. They can evade and they last longer if u need to use them in Hand to Hand. Not sure if this is accurate, but that is how it seems to work.
