RAMPAGE 2010 - ILFORD VARIABLE POINTS COMP -15 & 25mm

Post by shall »

A FRESH FUN FORMAT ... ask those who came last year. .. being held in Ilford on June 26th 27th with trade show and bring and buy on Sunday as well.

As with last year, I will be running a FOG competition with the variable army sizes. The same format over 4 games - 700/800/900 point varaints with bonuses for big wins. Last year several bonuses for routing an army 100 points bigger, and 1 person nearly won the special prize for routing a 200pt. Full details of comp rules are on the Ilford site.

THIS YEAR in 25mm as well as 15mm. Last year there were around 30 FOG players, hoping we can get that up a fair bit this year.

Poll for those who tride it attached just to consolidate knowledge and inform others.

I was the first person to vote against but then I did not attend last year and don't think I can attend this sp my vote may well carry less weight.

I think it would help to make a PBI mod, such as:

a 700 playing a 900 gets a bonus +2 PBI
a 700 v 800 or 800 v 900 gets +1

based on the fact that the smaller force is accepting battle because of a perceived local advantage?

If you do this then you might want to tweak the bonus points.

I liked the competition, but I didnt like being on the wrong side of the points and getting badly beaten in pretty much every game.

I would like to see all the scoring adjusted for points - so if you lose 6-4 with a 200pt defecit you get some bonus.

I'll give that some thought Paul. I may be able to come up with something that also compensates for a bit of bad luck in the draw - but also it was part of the fun. IIRC you were on the less than favaourable end of match ups.

I couldn't make it last year but the format appeals and I plan to be there.

Will the variable points apply to 25mm as well?

Absolutely. In fact have just agreed we will play the same points sizes on 9 x 4 tables - so you will need 900pts of those big boys. The extra width may give scope for some of the less punchy 25mm armies to have a fighting chance as well. On a 6x4 at 650 pts its hard to see past Romans, Spartans, Seleucids. But with 700pts on a 9x4 some holes will appear for sure.

Open to feedback here if people feel 6/7/800 on an 8ft wide table would be better - just mindful of whether people may have fewer models spare in 25mm ...??? thoughts???

Nick, does that mean its me and you in the 25mm so far .... ideally I am going to play 25mm while organising and I will play the bottom player ... FWIW I am going to be bringing my New Kingdom Egyptians in 25mm ... not because they are good but because they are pretty!! And they hate armoured Romans!

Although I did not play last year I do like the idea of viable army lists. I have adopted the idea for the Oxford 25 mm Competition in September. Not sure about 9' wide tables as I think 8' is wide enough.

If I do play (need to check with the Boss, Lynda and David) 900 points of Later Anglo-Irish sounds good. Held its own against Romans at Challenge. 800 and 900 point armies will be difficult to beat.

8' wide should be enough IMO - whether you go with 6/7/800 or 7/8/900.

I'll do 25mm - got the taste for it after the Challenge, and my painting table only has 25mm on it at the moment :D I think I have enough Principate to stretch to 800 and probably 900 - as long as I get them painted

Exellent - I will look forward to running away from them as much as a 4ft deep table allows! I don't think there is anything in the NKE that has a + against Romans in Shooting, Impact or Melee!!

8ft view noted and will await others.

Hi guys

I may be tempted for this if I can get some others from my club to come along.

Am I right in thinking the 15mm is anything from books 1 through to 9?

Yes Rob

Both comps are completley open in army choice.

Years ago I played in a similar comp at Newbury.

My suggestion, to make things interesting, is that each player submits a 700, 800 and 900 pt army list with the core 700 pts being the same in each list and then additional units added to make up the other two lists.

The competitors are then drawn and, knowing the opponents army but not the size he is going to use, the player must select his army size. If there are four rounds each player must use no more than 3200 pts but in any combination, ie 2 x 700 and 2 x 900 or 4 x 800 etc. The umpire is informed each round of the size army each player will field but only by the player himself. At no time during the weekend is anyone but the player and the umpire aware of how many points they have used and , more importantly, how many they have left.

This format leads to some cracking last round games and to bluffs on ambushes, flank marches etc.

Disadvantage is extra work for the list checker but as long as the core 700pts never changes in each army this is not as onerous as it may seem.

I have asked Peter to reply to this one as he is timing organiser...but from memory last year we started promptly at 9 and I was there for registrationnfrom 8am. IIRC there was a time limit at the end of the day.

The first lists are in. Keep those registrations going to Peter Cross.

I am waiting to see whether I act as a 15mm or 25mm stand in.

Entries so far good enough for a decent 15mm and 25mm competition. The more the merrier.

There will be a prize for best terrain - so get the good stuff out!

I will be checking lists at the weekend so any in by then will get an early response.
