Maps

Post by metolius »

Hi there,

Are the full maps for CEAW available in a standard format anywhere?

Would be nice to be able to pour over them outside of the game.

Thanks!

:?: On the general topic of the GS map, is there any desire for further 'tidying up' {dons tin hat} of the map by reducing the amount of superfluous text thereupon?
E.g.
If 'Rail Cap [2]' was reduced to 'RC [2]' it would perhaps appear slightly cleaner and would not vie for the same amount of attention as the city name. The fact that 'Rail Cap' was being abbreviated to 'RC' could easily be noted in the manual. Alternatively, the city name would possibly be more prominent if font size of 'Rail Cap [2]' was reduced by one level.
Similarly, the map bears pleasant icons to denote mine & oil resource hexes: is there any benefit (either practically or visually) in having 'Crome & Bauxite' or 'Oilfield', etc, adjacent to such? Once again, if deemed desirable to keep such text, perhaps the font size could be reduced by one level?

Also, where there are land hexes on the map which cannot be entered by land or air units, perhaps those hexes could have some kind of visual unplayable/unusable symbol therein (maybe a small coloured 'x' or somesuch)? In an early game, I thought that it would be interesting to move an air unit into a hex, only to discover after I had moved into an interim hex (to bring the destination hex within range) that I could not enter it.

Kind regards. (especially to the map wizard!)

You can update message_eng.txt (or the similar other language file) for Index-798

Change it from Rail Cap to RC if you prefer that value.

The different kinds of resources (Iron, Manganese etc.) have no game implications. We used the ones from the vanilla game and added a few more ourselves like Molybdenum in Norway and Coal in Wales.

You can change all of these to just Mine if you edit ww2_city_eng.txt. Then you can search for the values you don't like and replace them.

I'm not so keen to alter the font size because for some people the font can then become too small. We're using the same font size as in the vanilla game. People play on different computers and some use substitution fonts to the ones the game wants to use (Haettenschweiler, Franklin and others). So we might open up a can of worms to reduce the font size.

Dear Stauffenberg,

Thanks for the suggestions. I was interested to see if that little paper boat would float upon any interest. Personally, I shall leave it as it is, as I endeavour to avoid specific tinkering with PC programmes. Methinks that my declining eyesight (&/or brain matter) automatically latches onto the largest sized text and so I was spending another second or two mentally switching from the Rail Cap text to the city name, as they both equally vied for my attention.

I was actually thinking of changing the font sizes (e.g. if the cities used Verdana 12pt, the Rail Cap, etc becoming 11pt) rather than the font types themselves. However, you are quite correct to remark upon players having differing PCs (& thereby differing monitors), which may have an easier or more difficult time with different font sizes. I must admit that I had not considered this aspect at all and now appreciate, that what may appear clear on my 24” LCD monitor, may not be so on a 15” screen.

I also now realise that if I had clicked on the ultimate destination hex prior to moving towards it, I would detected the 'out of play' message ...

Kind regards.
