Honourable Artillery Company

Today I had the joy of visiting the HAC ground in the City of London. They have some interesting 1640s style replica arms and armour which we saw, along with a very interesting archive (handling originals of Bariff, Caruso, and Aevlin (sp?) was a real joy) and a short talk on Sir Philip Skippon.

The very interesting part was seeing the drill books that the officers and men were using in the 1630s and 1640s and their influence on the London Trained Bands and the number of their officers who served in Horse regiments. Given that Caruso seems to be the drill manual of choice and the number of Dutch trained officers that were in both the English and Scots armies, it maybe that the Dutch system for horse and foot may be even more prevelant in the training of the armies of the ECW than we already think.
