After install GS mod Font sizes on city names has increased

Post by rayhughes »

Hello, new to this forum and very new to the Game.
Have played around with a couple of early attempts, then decided to install the GS off the Slitherine Site.

Game runs, but all the fonts on the main screen for citiy and resource names are bigger now. So much so that they all overextend into each others names on the furtherest zoom out. Also the grey information box which displays scenario events now displays at a larger font so that line 3 of the message is chopped off at the bottom.

I am running windows 7 64bit

Is there a way to change the font size in game?

Many thanks for any help

Can you post a screenshot so we can see what you mean? Any details on your machine specs would also help.

Do you have the Haettenschweiler font installed? It's not part of Windows, but comes with MS Office. The vanilla game also uses Haettenschweiler. So it's strange it's different between the vanilla game and GS.

You can download Haettenschweiler here:

Actually, I have tried launching the original 1.12 without the GS Mod and the fonts are the same size, so I was wrong about them being bigger. My apologies. Still, there appears to be more information on the maps with the GS MOD which leads to a clutter all over the map. And also more info in the popup boxes leading to 3 line displays of info, with the bottom of the 3rd row cut off.

I will download the recommended Font and see if that makes a difference

It makes more sense that the text is too big both in the vanilla game and GS. Such behavior is normal if you don't have the Haettenschweiler font installed. Then the game must use a substitute font and it's not as compressed horizontally as Haettenschweiler.

Remember to place the new font in the windows/fonts directory and go into the control panel and fonts to select Install New Font from the File menu. Then select the path where your fonts are and select the Hatten.ttf font.

Missing Font

Post by rayhughes »

Ok, just a followup. I have installed the missing font and things are back to normal.
Thank you to those who replied and helped.

By the way, great game -especially with the GS mod. Very enjoyable!!

Now, just a wish, I have a 22" wide screen 1680x1050 LCD and of course the native resolution makes this game all stretched. I have read the posts from other users where the answer is NO you cannot change the resolution from 1024 x768. This default leaves the map and icons all fat and looks unattractive on my screen - and by the sounds of things, many other gamers too.

No real explanation is given as to why not - so it leaves the question pending. Does anyone have a definitive answer as to why it is not possible to have a higher resolution for the game. For me this would make it sooo much better graphically.

Thanks

I also have a 1680x1050 monitor and running 1024x768 full screen. I don't have any problems with a stretched map, icons and fonts.

Have you tried to run in windowed mode?

It's VERY HARD to change the game resolution because in Java you hardcode the size of the different frames you show on the screen. So it's hardcoded that the biggest frame is 1024x768. If I increased this to 1680x1050 then I had to find similar increased values for all other frames as well. Then the icons and text would become distorted because they have more room than before.

So in order to do this you need to hardcode separate frame values and use separate icons and font sizes for EVERY resolution you support. That is almost like redesigning the game completely a number of times. I think we can use our time better by doing something that will increase the game functionality rather than redoing what's already working for different resolutions.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes of course, functionality is far more important. Limits of Java I guess. A real shame. As for windowed mode. well it forces the game to show in the top left corner of the screen and it cannot be moved from that position, also it appears too small to view properly. Am I doing something wrong? I had to create a custom hertz rate based on someone from this forum in order to get this game to run under windows 7 at all.
