What's Up With The Price Increase?
I've been lurking here and at some other sites that have some interesting games out or about to be released. I was leaning towards Field of Glory to purchase for $29.95 USD. Then today I noticed it jumed to $39.95. Not a great move with the economy and such being what they are.Slitherine should of put the price at $39.95 from the beginning and not played games with the few numbers of us who buy this type of game. Anyway ,on the idea that I think this is not fair business practice to the wargaming community I'll buy someting else and not Field of Glory.

By not purchasing this game, you aren't significanty hurting Slitherine...but what you are doing is not getting the finest game of its kind currently on the market.
I just spent about $60 on a TON of source books for ancient battles...and I have no clue as to how many hours I will spend researching and developing new scenarios.
This is just a terrific product all around, with the easiest to use scenario generation system I have ever seen.
For the gameplay, the scenario generator, the coming army builder, battle generator, and the likely HUNDREDS of user created scenarios, this game is excellent value at twice the cost.

I think Slitherine's start lower then hike the price strategy is a good one, I think.
The 'standard' for computer games of all stamps, including wargames, seems to be to rush out a more or less broken product and sell it for top dollar. Then to gradually reduce the price as the game is fixed until two years later one can buy a more or less workable (but often imperfect) product for half the original price or less. To me, this has always seemed insane.
Given that Slitherine's FoG has relatively few glitches, and that they seem committed to fixing them as fast as they can, and improving the basic product (as opposed to just fixing what idn't work), it seems to me sensible to pre-order their product and/or to buy early before the price is increased. As they say, that rewards loyalty, and makes me much, much more likely to buy future product as soon as it appears (rather than waiting the now obligatory two years...)

This is a completely valid point..I STILL haven't purchased Empire: Total War, as there are still just too many bugs for me.Paisley wrote:I think Slitherine's start lower then hike the price strategy is a good one, I think.

I haven't run across even one bug..although my units tend to roll ones an awful lot!

You really shouldn't let $10 get between you and a really superb game which, to judge by the upcoming extension, is only going to get a lot better! Stump up for FoG and preorder the expansion while its at a discount.surfcandy wrote:I've been lurking here and at some other sites that have some interesting games out or about to be released. Now that I come to look a little closer I, too, see lots of ones when I lose. Well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.
ianiow, as I am just slightly north of you, on the south coast, perhaps you may care for a game where there is no potential time-zone problems. If so, drop me an email and we can organise something.

Hi!
I think its kind of refreshing that for once its the early buyers the ones that get the lower price and not the other way aroudn
They are the ones that show their support, take risks from possible early bugs and get the developer going with their money. Getting a discount for all of this seems a good idea IMHO.
I bet in a couple of years FoG will be bundled with some of the future expansions at a great price so latecomers will also get some nice offer
In any case the price increase after January has been announced since the beginning so its looks 100% fair to me... and people have been given plenty of time to take advantage of it...
Cheers

Actually there are better games like HPS's Punic Wars and Gallic Wars with 100 scenarios between them and a lot better ai opponent. Graphics wise neither takes any awards home but at least the stands in the HPS games are solid. There's also a 3rd game out Alexander to add even more scenarios and challenge. I was very disappointed in FOG for several reasons but the brain dead ai was the main one along with the rediculous empty holed stands just made the game look cheap and unfinished. I certainly would have never spent $39.95 on it new.DennisS wrote:By not purchasing this game, you aren't significanty hurting Slitherine...but what you are doing is not getting the finest game of its kind currently on the market.

I own all 3 HPS Ancient Battles Series and to be honest I have yet to finish a single game and multiplayer ? No one seem want to play at all ...I never touch these games again for along time ( bought the bundle( used ) quite cheap
- no wonder the guy want to sell !!)
With FOG , I have almost finish up to 20 games within few days and Multiplayer ..I am into my 15th games already
You tell me which one is better !!

Yes there are some that want to play a beer & pretzels game vs a challenging detailed game like HPS puts out I can understand that. For those that want detailed battles though with a worthy ai the HPS titles are the best.papajack wrote:I own all 3 HPS Ancient Battles Series and to be honest I have yet to finish a single game and multiplayer ? Price Increase
Yes, I like the Slitherine approach of awarding core fans with reduced cost for preordering. I am looking forward to each and everyone of the updates for the 13 Army books. Wow -that will be a whole lot of armies! Not to mention the variations you can play when you throw in the allies. You will never know what you are going to run into when you accept a battle. I am looking forward to playing with the army builder just as much as playing with the armies. Some people critize the AI and it has had it's issues - but honestly I play for the Multiplayer experience. I really like the way it is put together.
