Aztec back banners

Post by chrisrivers13 »

Did the Aztecs actually use the ornate back banners in battle or was it just a ceremonial thing? If they were used in battle, which troops would have had the banners?

Thanks,
Chris R.

The banners would have been used in battle. Quite why is a bit unclear - though senior commanders used drums and banners for signalling. possibly they formed the same role as European heraldry - identifying the guys doing the brave stuff?

As with most things Aztec, the senior guys would have the banners. The more senior the more elaborate.

How you model it is open to interpretation. Some choose to have just one banner per BG. Others have lots of them to make the army pretty.

I've heard you were one for decorative clothing and colourings Graham. Obviously some sort of battle honour, ......................................but I'm not sure quite what for?
