Moving to Overlap Position

Post by TERRYFROMSPOKANE »

Please refer to the diagram on pg 86. Let's say the LH that are in contact with the flank of enemy stand "B" could not get to their current position during the impact phase (maybe they had to wheel twice or more than 90 degrees). Could they have moved there during the Manuever Phase and then count as an overlap during the Melee Phase? That is, is it legal to move into frontal contact with the enemy flank without charging?

Thanks, Terry G.

I don't believe so - no. Read the definition of overlaps on Page 75. The LH BG on P86 is not in overlap - it's in contact.

I'm fine with that, Pete but why hasn't the base right behind "B" turned to face the LH as the base did on the other end of the line facing the cavalry in contact?

It is possible for bases to end up in side contact. If the light horse on the right were in edge contact but not able to fight as an overlap at the start of their move then they could have turned 90 degrees into contact. The rules at the top of P77 and on P78 then apply and the contacted bases do not have to turn to face.

An unusual situation but not an impossible one.

I have absolutely no idea. :)

Hammy's suggestion is plausible but unlikely given the diagram.

I suspect they just forgot to show the base turned to the flank. Since the BG is already fighting in 2 directions there is no good reason not to fight the LH. And if the LH charged in then it should have turned. But Hammy is right to point out the additional rules on Pages 76, 77 and 78 - although personally I've never seen it happen.
