Better Unit Graphics?

You know one of the reasons I discarded FoG was because of the unit graphics. Is there any way to make them more crisp like these we have for avatars on this forum? I like solid looking icons on the map and what I see is just a cluster fork of colors on the map and it's just not crisp or detailed enough. They look too cartoony and what is the word? Pixelated to the max? The avatar icons on this forum are pretty sharp and crisp...what game are they from?
